Online Marketing pre-Google

Hi,

I guess this is really a question for anyone who was working an online business before the advent of Google, Yahoo, etc., which I believe was about 12/15 or so years ago.

I appreciate that whilst IM these days must be easier from a technology point of view, the levels of competition online are significantly higher.

I'm curious to know what it was like to start an online business back then, what methods were used and how easy (or difficult) it was to build a customer base when I assume that the vast majority of people didn't have regular access to the internet?

Also, as often happens with something new, were people generally very wary of dealing with an online business?

If anyone would be willing to share their story or point me in the direction of any relevant blogs, articles, etc., I'd be grateful.

Reading this back, I realise that it may sound like I need this information for some kind of research - I don't!!

I'm just genuinely interested to hear from anyone who did it then and how it compares in 2011.

Thanks in advance,

Brian

I used to do local advertising on a forum some 12 years ago or so. It was a big pain to get them to advertise I come from Serbia originally and this wasn't helping at all! Not in that time anyway, it's much better now.

I don't know about you but I never got on a google train. I could always get better offers than PPC as a publisher. On the other side I used it as an advertiser for some time but again never google No particular reason other than I always got a better deal elsewhere.
