Some people just don't have a clue about what the phrase "no politics" means.

If anyone really wants to know the answer to this question for themselves, as a cab driver how they are doing. They are the best real indicator of the econmony in their area.

I have been to many countries and been in many more taxis, USA excluded.

I have yet to find a taxi driver who does not plead poverty.

Frankly, I am still amazed that there are ANY taxi drivers in the US! If I tried it I would say:

Let me get this straight....

I need to get a special license? OK
I need to pay for the gas? Ok...........
I need to pay for the car lease? Are you KIDDDING ME?
I need to pay for the medallion?
I need to pay to be able to pick up at the airport?
I have to wait a month for all credit card income?
I take on nearly ALL risks?
YOU own the car and make profit on most of the above, INCLUDING the base fee?

There may be more, but MAN! And MOST taxicab drivers HATE credit cards. Many won't even ACCEPT them! Many others will ignore your calls, or not be too quick to help if you use a credit card. WHY? Because they may not see the money for a MONTH and you will use up resources they need to make money NOW! If you are say the fifth in line for a cab, they will pick YOU up FIRST if you have CASH!

I DID say "I take on nearly all risks". That means collisions, theft, maintenance, and YEP, even being held at gun point. Practically the ONLY risks you don't take are subsequent problems, if the car is stolen, or liability if someone sues(assuming that you aren't required to get FULL insurance), registration defects, etc....

  Your pay is mostly cash (fares and tips), so when a passenger asks how business is (as they almost always do, just to make conversation), one of the first things you learn is to ALWAYS say it's been a crappy night... the last thing you want to do is broadcast that you're carrying a large amount of cash on you.

It's high time all their crimes were exposed / made public & they were held accountable

Maybe the feds (gov) can't - but the FED (World Bank) not only can - they should be forced to tell the truth. We should have a choice whether to continue to fund that travesty or not. I'm thinking - NOT.

All the fed can do is tell you things like the debt oevef the US, and affiliates so to speak, and dollars known to be in circulation. BTW look at the usdebt clock U.S. National Debt Clock : Real Time us total debt. Is there an emoticon here to show crying?

they got an even better excuse now, since they took down building 5 in NYC, thats where they kept all the debt, corrupt, etc, records.

over $2T of US's debt, expenditure, was in there too... how convenient.

Well, you are taking like 1960s, where online backup and networks were RARE. YOU are talking about something that happened in 2001, when online backup and networks are SO common that probably 30% or more of those that have them don't even know it!!!! And it is STILL common! HOW common? Well, everyone on this system probably has it to some respect and, if the world were a 3' x 5' map, this system wouuld be like a pin prick. Internet use is huge, and those using networks is larger still.

I live in the UK although did live in the US for almost 5 years and still keep an eye on US politics and news (we get the hilarious Fox News feed on Sateliite). I would say the answer for both those countries is "2".

I too used to consider myself an 'activist' in many senses but also came to the realization you can't change the world situation. In the UK I have lived through a long run of Conservative government and also through a long run of the Labour party, and now am experiencing a the liberal/conservative mishmash. And you know what? All of them are the same and none of them are really capable of running a country.

The good news is that you can change your own world. You have to work for yourself and then you have control. You need to change how you approach business depending on the economy but generally speaking my business does equally well in both boom and bust times. So from that point of view I don't really care what the media tell us or whether the figures are true or not. As long as I understand how people percieve and feel in the current climate I can adjust my strategies accordingly and continue to do well.

Why don't we just have allen shut the whole system down. This deals with the ECONOMY. If we should ignore any meaningful thing about that, IM and all other things mean nothing and deal with politics. In the main forum, for example, many talk about using some OTHER currency, abandoning the dollar, and following currency fluctuations.

As for the poll here? look at the new, prices, etc... CLEARLY the answer is 2.

I say #1:

- The dept of labor reports on the jobs situation:

- The fed reports on the money supply etc.

We were even told about the Quantitative Easing program of the Fed, whereas the fed released/loaned even more money to the big banks - other than the big bailouts of 2008.

- The CBO (Congressional Budget Office) simply crunches the numbers and gives pretty accurate projections and effects of particular pieces of legislation.

My faith in these institution is not blind.

There is no good reason for these offices to lie about the numbers that everyone uses to gauge where the economy is.

If the situation were even worse than it is, I'm sure at least one party would be crying about a cover up etc. - every time the numbers are released.

The charts don't say we're close to a double dip yet.

It's still a very bleak picture but we are not losing 700k jobs per month as we were doing in Jan of 2009.

There's a lot of justified frustration out here but there is no proof that the major stats for this society are being fudged.

I took a cab recently because my car was in the shop and I had no choice.
The driver spoke hardly any english and was borderline rude. Even though the ad on yellowpages.com said they took credit cards,he told me he didn't.
He then said I would have to pay a $15 minimum for using a credit card even though the fair was only $10.50.
I was tempted to report him,but then decided not to. Who knows if I will ever need a cab again,and it was hard enough to get this one to show up.

Exactly Ken I have a friend here who used to drive a cab in the winter.
Me told me another thing he did if the fare looked shady (which is almost everyone around here) was when they asked how his night was going he'd say they where his first fare.
That was from a guy who went through a home invasion and put 3 of the 5 gang members in the hospital.

The way I understand it, MOST taxicab drivers DON'T advertise. They also HATE taking cash. But they can't really manage all the hoops, etc....

COMPANIES prefer credit cards as it simplifies book keeping, and reduces theft. And THEY don't want to drive, but DO manage the hoops.

And THAT is probably why the phonebook said they accept credit cards and the driver didn't.

I've had a LOT of experience here. Your chances of getting a cab triple or quadruple if you have cash.
