Have you ever run out of gas?

I have once and it wasn't my fault. I had just bought a car and found out the hard way "empty" was when the gas gauge said about 1/8th of a tank.

Having said this, I've been the type of person to really push it and have probably gotten lucky more than once.

Now that I'm older, I like keeping the tank full, just in case.

I've only run out a few times - considering how much I drive and where I go, that's not too bad. Once was not my fault, other than I didn't think to check the gauge and someone had siphoned my gas. I didn't get too far. That would be a shooting offense at the price of gas today I would think.

One time in L.A. I ran out of gas in a van on the freeway.

However I was going so fast (wasn't rush hour...obviously..:p)
That I made it up an off ramp, thru a light, down the hill, caught a light thru a 5 way (or 6 can't remember) (it's in Burbank) intersection and pulled into a gas station on the corner...on the wrong side of the gas pump.

I had to screw the luck up somehow.

I ran out of gas on the 710 going north from the harbor up to the 91 in an old MBZ 260 quasi sports car. It had two carberators and one of them ran out of gas before the other one did.

So I'm like "WTF? Did I just lose half my engine?!?"

I was lucky I had enough momentum to get onto an off ramp (my off ramp) and have the dang car come to a stop around a blind curve with almost no shoulder. Luckily a Caltrans truck pulled up and they let me call my boss who came the 3 miles with gas in hand.

      Here's what I learned...

The gas in a fuel line is good for about 100 feet per inch...

As a kid we would always run out of gas...Mom wasn't the best at planning ahead.

Seems I was always pushing cars as a kid. This was in the days when it seemed cars were made out of cast iron and if you got into an accident, you'd just hose off the dash and sell it to the next person.

And, the cars got about 9 gallons to the mile.

Yea Bill that was one of the weirder intersections in LA.... Burbank, where Victory, Burbank and a few others meet, but not all in the same place.
I was trying to put on a map to show how lucky I was but I can't get the embed or link.

I haven't experienced that yet, because I always make sure that I have enough gas so I won't run out of it.

  • Yeah same thing happened to me. I got a new truck and didn't know how far I could go. I was late for class so I didn't stop. I ran out on the freeway and the next offramp was a ways away! Man walking on the freeway is NOT fun. Im an idiot

One time - many years ago. I coasted into a gas station just off an exit ramp. The pump nozzle barely reached - but that was better than "almost reached".

I've never let it get that low again in any car. Not worth the stress or hassle.

it happened to me once. The gas guage on my car was not accurate and here we were stuck in the middle of nowhere up north several miles away from the nearest gas station. So we had to wait around a half hour before a relative could find us on the highway and rescue us.

Now, I never let my car run much below a quarter tank of gas.

I tend to push it. And because of this, I ran out once and only once back in 2001 while living in Phoenix. In August. . . It was a cool 114 degrees that brisk summer day and I ran out on the side of interstate 10 on some newer blacktop and it felt oh so good. I believe I got about 10 feet before sweating profusely drenched me. The nearest exit was 2 to 3 miles ahead and I believe I would've passed out from heat stroke had it not been for a good samaritan about 20 more feet. He just pulled over and said, "you need a ride?" Sounded like the voice of an angel and I was grateful. He took me to a gas station where I proceeded to call this hostess where I worked to come and take me back to my car with my new gas can. I'm still thankful to this day. I just forgot to look at the gauge, running late for work and all. It was on E of course.

Never been out of gas but actually a friend did. It was funny... he was less than half a mile from a gas station and we ended up pushing his car dressed in suits coming back from a wedding.

We ended up getting the car all the way to the station - mind you it's an SUV and pushing it uphill required a LONG TIME and lots of breaks. We get to the station and less than 40 feet from the pump is the entrance to the station. It's about 2am and no help in sight except a scrawny clerk who watches us.

We can't get it to go over the bump which is between the station and the car.

We end up putting it in park, buying a $2 canister, filling it with $1 of gas, and putting it in the car and driving up to the pump -_-

I used to travel for a living, so I have been pretty lucky. The ONE time I ran out of gas (in my car), it stalled as I was turning in to a gas station and I coasted to the pump. Talk about lucky.

I ran out twice on my motorcycle. The first time was the day I bought it. There is no gas gauge so you go by odometer and I grossly underestimated how far a tank would take me. I had to push it about a mile.

The second time was not my fault - the gas line cracked and I was losing gas and did not realize it. I was riding with a friend who went and got me some gas.

I run out of gas all the time because I am running on LPG (liquid petroleum gas). It's not a problem as I switch over to petrol when the gas runs out and fill up with LPG at the next filling station that stocks.

I had a brand new company car at one time and the petrol guage was faulty and I ended up running out of petrol on the motorway and had to wait for an hour for the AA to come. It's no fun breaking down on the motorway at night in the cold.

On another occassion, I was very lucky. I ran out of petrol as I was just coming up to a motorway exit. The engine came to a stop. I knew there was a gargare about three quarters of a mile away and it was downhill all the way if I could just keep rolling. I had to exit the motorway without stopping at the island and I could take the first exit off the island. I also had to get through a set of traffic lights so was hoping that I would not have to stop. Was I relieved when I managed to coast onto the forecourt having coasted for a three quarters of a mile without petrol.

I have never run out of gas, but I have driven away with the hose still in the tank, does that count?
I'll add the station was full-serve the attendant never took the hose out :-(
