Turns out they REALLY suck!

Nothing new huh?

About time to get to know other payment processors.

Please share this around if you want to guys but a fair word of warning:

If they steal from Charity... WATCH OUT!

PAYPAL: You can use the donate button to raise money for a sick cat, but not poor people.
    Rofl...Santa Pal

Some of these places are getting so big, the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing.
    IMHO
The CS rep was thinking they had to follow some rule about non-profits or something.

They did say they released the money tho...nothing like looking like the Grinch who stole Christmas

Okay - Paypal can do some seriously abominable things - but this one needs to be cleared up.

The "charities" are not being stolen from -- did you see that the account holders are being forced to refund the donations?

    Why?
Because they are not legitimate charities - they have no legal business papers designating them as charities. In other words - they may just be fraud plain and simple. They may not be - the owner of the cited charity may have a heart of gold - but with no charity designation, you can't run a charity under law, just like you need a business license to do anything else.

So paypal is not STEALING - they are following the law. If that business had sold something to the donors, then given the money from the product to the kids, it would not have been closed down. Their business registration is "for profit".

Bottom line is that if you hold a fundraiser - you have to know what the laws are and make sure you follow them. There are a million scam artists out there that would love to use the excuse of fundraising to steal money. If this business would have done it correctly - they'd not have gotten shut down. All they had to do is make a small ebook or two to sell, then use the proceeds however they wished - and it would have been tax deductable as well.

Find a new rant - this one doesn't work.

Forgive me if you thought I was ranting here. Simply giving away information that ALREADY has been spoke of from Techcrunch.com

Just saying it is not the first time people are having issues with Paypal and maybe it is time to look for a new solution then them.

I have heard DOZENS, maybe HUNDREDS, but CERTAINLY dozens, of people effectively say that paypal is rotten, etc.... because paypal wouldn't let them rip off people, break the law, and launder money! SERIOUSLY! Sometimes they almost use those SAME words. They are open and shut GUILTY and likely they aren't behind bars! Is paypal bad? MAYBE! But a LOT of the things paypal is accused of are just WRONG!

THIS sounds like one of them.

    PayPal Statement:
We can’t comment specifically on the Regretsy.com account due to our privacy policy. However, we can confirm that the funds have been released and we are working directly with the account holder on this matter. We are also making a donation to Regretsy to help families in need this holiday season. We’re very sorry this occurred.
For reference, we have clear guidelines for any business who uses PayPal to accept donations. For example, we require certain documentation to prevent misuse of the donated funds and, if the recipient claims charitable status, to determine whether they are properly registered. As a regulated payment service, we’re also required by law to follow these guidelines.
We appreciate that this can be an inconvenience, but we have a responsibility to all our customers – both donors and recipients; or buyers and sellers. In this instance, we recognized our error and moved as swiftly as possible to fix it.
That's not what I read Sal, they did make a mistake and admitted it.
It was also the donee's? lol....mistake for not using the right button and/or not getting verified as a non profit..

Hey if you can't make fun of those Grinches at Xmas...what's it for?

Being as(un)regulated as they are, they do indeed pull a lot of crap.

Okay - they admitted they made the mistake. That's not paypal's fault. On the other hand, they have seized a lot of accounts for no other reason than the person has started to finally make some good money -- I'd be more likely to bitch about that one.

It is sad though that we have to jump through these kind of hoops to be able to get some help out to little kids. That's what happens when the population sits around their tv's with their finger in their noses and their thumbs up their butt while the nation gets turned into a corporation. Sorry about our luck -- but it's totally our own fault. That doesn't make us scrooge....but it does make us Goofy.

    Get your cartoons straight, man.

Here in Florida we have tons of phoney "donation" scams targeting the elderly. Most of these use phone boiler rooms to solicit. For every one that gets shut down three more pop up. One guy recently had about thirty of these going all at once. The money is gone and because he made very small donations to a variety of charities he may be a quarter of an inch inside the law. Mostly his lawyer speaks for him as he is on an extended vacation in Aruba. (His former business model was running psychic hot lines.)

Paypal's problem here is that they don't make the guidelines clear when someone goes to use a donation button. I mean, if it IS unlawful for someone without the right taxcode to accept charity, then paypal DOES have the technology to prevent donation buttons from being made until they have the documentation they need.

Let's be real here - even on this forum I've seen dozens of cases where people have been taking charity for fellow forum members using paypal's donation button, and I'm pretty sure none of them are legally qualified to do so.

Personally, I think that paypal operates like this on purpose. They want people to break their poorly written rules, because they make money when people break them. Then every now and then they'll freeze arbitrary accounts, just to show that they're making an effort to follow the law. It's the only way they stay ahead of the game against companies that actually obey the law.

One of these days it will catch of with them in a major way. (of course I've been saying that for years and it never has yet)

Come on - there are clear rules about charitable donations and also statements about the potential of a "site review" for those using the donate button. Laws about charitable donations are not paypal laws - but they have to abide by them. There are enough fake charities as it is. The site in question is not a nonprofit nor a registered charity - that's why the review occurred when money was pouring in.

This site owner basically says they are "above" being reviewed. The service rep at paypal was wrong - but looking at the attitude displayed on the website (and the language) I have to wonder if the rep reacted in anger and made a bad decision during a review.

Now the site owner wants paypal to "donate" $100 each for 200 kids. Don't ask for much, do they? I have to wonder - if they collect as much money as they say - why only 200 kids are helped?

The story's over but I expect the paypal bashing will go on till January.
