End of The World Countdown...

I have a feeling that in 5 days alot of Mayan calender freaks are going to be jumping off bridges saying "I cant understand the meaning of life...".

Can you believe how invested some are into the idea that the world is about to end?

Seriously, there are people who have built entire careers teaching that as soon as 2012 turns , the world is going to end...

Of course the closer it gets the more they water down the teaching
and say "Its just gonna be an energetic shift".

Cop outs.

Stand by your conviction man!

At very least, alot of spiritual gurus are about to go broke and lose their followings.

Thats MY prediction.

There may have been an error in the Gregorian calendar by as much as 8 years. So we may have at least until 2020 to milk this thing -er, before the end comes.

I am really not paying any attention to the world ending in December 2012. For all I know, I could have an auto accident tomorrow and the Mayans would be wrong on my account.

Actually, they probably just ran out of space to count any higher when they were putting their calendar together (I saw that suggested somewhere.) Alternatively, they had a wicked sense of humor knowing they'd be the cause of tremendous panic and no one could do anything to them since they were long gone.

I don't know how this end of the world business got started. The Mayens didn't predict the end would be on Dec. 21, 2012. What they really said was the procession of the equinox would end it's cycle. Each cycle is roughly 25,000 years give or take.

That is when the Zodiac returns to the beginning. You have heard of the Age of Aquarius well each age as they call it lasts Approximately two thousand years and we have just gone through the age of Pisces. This is what is known as the great year..

That's what they CLAIM! With all the references and hemming and hawing, you KNOW that there is like 100 years plus before that famous period, so the 8 years might be over 100! The first reference appears to be like 800 or so AD. EARLY references, like 33AD are clearly defining different things, etc... The fact that there was apparently more than one stage to the leap year calculations indicates over 100 years. So we KNOW it was over 33 years. It was definitely before 1500. Does anyone know EXACTLY when?

telearn - you have your cultures mixed up. The zodiac (as it relates to the Age of Aquarius) is not Mayan, although they did study astronomy and recognize some constellations.

If you want to read the facts on Mayans - the math, the calendar, religion, etc -- the following link is an excellent source of information describing the basics of Mayan thought and knowledge. You can get the drift from this how someone was able to *******ize the info to create the idea of "the end". Most of what has gone on in the prophecy is marketing - someone formed a religion on that marketing and others have made a killing on it as well. Here are the facts. It's written by a non-native speaker so just ignore the few grammatical inconsistencies.

I thnk telearns point is that the mayan calendar is based on planetary cycles, just like the astronomical ages. telearn brought up the age of aquarius to build a reference, and mentioned we were done with that and already through pisces.

Technically, mentioning it is the end of a cycle is saying the SAME thing since a cycle, by definition, would have to repeat. The talk of astronomy symbols/ages just broke it down to smaller chunks.

Then again, I often do the same sort of thing and people zone out THERE also.

During my lifetime the world has ended many times, before miracously restarting.

These restarts, by bizarre coincidence, happen at the exact moment my hangover wears off.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that the world will end again as we pass into the New Year, but will restart sometime on New Year's Day, once again coinciding with another hangover wearing off.

Thanks Sal...I downloaded and will read it later.

Just by the by...last night I saw a documentary on History or Discov. or something...one of the 3am, Our Friend the Beaver channels.

Anyway they had a show on about the Maya and how the calender actually goes on for eons. because of the ever growing cycles they did them in. Something was important about the 21st of December, but it wasn't the end of the world.

These were actual professors...from there, and other Universities, it was actually lucid..I'll read this as soon as tonight see what it says...I notice it's written in 2003, before the 'marketing' hysteria really started.

I have a new theory on that, whatever. Although I do like the hangover theory...happens on the right side of the world too...:p

See, if we take all the end of the world prophecies, from 1900 till present day, and count them. Then we divide by four...add three, then, count the stars and divide by 122111, we will actually have the correct date.
'Course I may be missing a step, but I'm willing to bet someone's selling the missing step for 27.97...

December 21st is winter solstice - it's also a solstice in which the galaxy aligns in a special way. Our arm of the galaxy will be aligned with the center of the milky way so the solar system will be directly parallel with it. That's one of the reasons that the doomsday predictions have gone nuts. We will be in the path of cosmic wind that we usually aren't aligned with. That might effect solar energy, or electro-magnetism on earth. You could possibly theorize that if there's a lot of particles in cosmic wind that a cloud of them could ignite if they blow past the sun like sawdust can ignite in open flame. Seeing how the earth and life on earth survived the last galactic alignment, I'm not seeing anything too wild happening. Maybe some electrical problems here and there, but if history is any indication of how the planet survives such an alignment - it does so without much event.

How does this work in terms of world clocks? It becomes midnight, December 21, 2012 somewhere in the world. Greenwich mean time?

My point is it will be 12/21/12 somewhere and still be 12/20/12 here.

Also Greenwich mean time is an arbitrary point where it was agreed to set the prime meridian.

I suppose since this is a Mayan prophecy, 12/21/12 would begin at midnight, west coast USA.

      Rolling doom.

Doomsday will start where and when the first clock strikes midnight. As time advances around the globe, so too will doom.

That's why I'm keeping my 2011 calendar on the wall forever. As an extra precaution I also removed all the 12's off my clocks.

LeeLee - read the link I put in here. Scientists can't even agree on the concise date - 21st or 23rd. Their sense of time passage was different from ours, as were their mathematics. But to answer your direct question, it would appear that anything that happens via their calendar coordinates with their timeline. That only makes sense.

Also, Whatever happens has to effect different parts of the world differently based on angle, the orbit of the earth, the revolution of the earth, etc... Who can really say WHAT would happen. It would probably be one of the largest solar events in all of history, outside of comets and the like. So waves may be bigger, earthquakes may be more likely, maybe it would even increase solar flares and THEY could do a lot. But that isn't to say that any direct event may kill anyone.

LOL! Real astronomy does not support any match between the Mayan calendar Baktun-13 end date and any "galactic alignment". The winter-solstice sun won’t even pass close to the galactic equator for another 200 years. But, it's fun (and profitable) to speculate. FYI, Amazon has tens of thousands of books about this for your reading (and marketing) pleasure.

I forget which bodies are supposed to be in alignment, but there are a LOT.

Still, we ARE getting an increase in the weather, etc... that may be due to that. There HAVE been cases of similar things playing havok with communications for a while. So it is ALL possible. I think the only question is HOW FAR. It could be SO little, that people won't even realize it. If not for economic ties, communication, and flights, the average american would NEVER have heard of that tsunami in japan, or haiti. HELL, even the BP disaster.

The weather is changing, because we are moving tree's to the desert, that have never been there. Probably more transplanted trees in Southern Cali than there ever have been here.

In fact, according to archaeologists, it wasn't the Mayans who linked the end of the 13th b'ak'tun with the end of the world. According to Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History, when Judeo-Christians began to decipher Mayan writings, their preconceived notions of apocalypse and the end of the world led them to link Mayan calendar cycles with doomsday.
"A lot of the end-of-the-world mythologies are the result of Christian eschatology introduced by Franciscan missionaries," John Hoopes, a scholar of Maya history at the University of Kansas, told Livescience, referring to missionaries just entering the New World and coming into contact with native people.
Maya scholars disagree on exactly how the Maya people would have interpreted the end of their calendar cycle, Hoopes said, though many say they would have seen it as a new beginning.

Mayans had absolutely no idea what they were in for when they first greeted the conquistador Francisco de Montejo in 1527. If it hadn't been for internal warfare, centuries of decline, and small pox, it would have taken the Spaniards far longer than the 170 years to impose their rule over the Maya.

I mean, just because the Mayans didn't continue doesn't necessarily mean a thing. Maybe they got tired. Maybe someone thought it would be funny. Who knows?
