Hello there I opened up an online business a few weeks ago thanks to warriorforum and I need to know a payment processor or an excellent merchant account to accept credit cards and paypal. I heard bad things about 2checkout, flagship merchant and merchant warehouse? Any other ones? I like one time payment as well no monthly fees

Volusion should take care of everything for you. They even give you a personal customer representative that is available nearly anytime. They're pricey but I think they're worth it.

I used paypal for the first 2 years and worked great (physical products not digital products)

I have started using Authorize.net via I-payment and I have definitely found an increase in conversions

If you use standard paypal (as opposed to paypal pro) many customers get confused when they leave your site to pay via paypal adding to a lose in sales.

If you're selling physical goods then getting a real merchant account will be easier than if you are selling digital goods or subscriptions.

if you are wanting to accept credit cards online, you are going to need:
    1) a shopping cart
    2)a merchant account
    3)a payment gateway

3 is where is gets tricky. most shopping carts will use authorize.net, however if you can find a merchant account provider that has a payment gateway that integrates directly into a shopping cart, you'll pay the least amount in fees if you are processing over $2k a month (my rule of thumb).

    options are,
    1)paypal: high fees, easy setup
2)Shoppify, 2shoppingcart etc: high transaction fees, easy setup, high monthly fees
3)various online shopping cart + auth.net +merchant account combos: not as high fees, more difficult to setup, monthly fees.
4)shopping cart + payment processor gateway (skip auth.net), lowest fees, most difficult to setup unless the processor has a pre-built plugin for your cart, lowest monthly fees.

the major carts (oscommerce, zencart etc) should have that plugin available however hardly anyone is aware of it.

as for fees, you'll see "qualified" rates such as 2.04%, 1.79% etc. waste of time to figure those out.

You want interchange plus, preferable around .39%, no setup fee and around $10/month statement fee.

other things to look for are next day funding.

shoot me a pm if you need more help.

edit: sorry didnt see that last post re: digital goods and seo services.

a virtual terminal maybe your best bet and those come with a payment gateway (because that's really what a payment gateway is; a virtual terminal). that way you can setup recurring billing and take credit/debit over the phone.

Sparklers, I currently cannot pm but can I have more info? Is there an alternative to 2checkout? Something along time lines, I am still a small company and don't want to pay fees like that.

well yes, if you are counting paypal as a gateway.

Auth.net is a gateway to a gateway. They are a middle man and charge you for it. Do they provide a good service? Yes.

but many shopping carts try to pigeon hole you into a gateway/merchant account combo and extract fees from you, many times fees that are really high.

why do they do that? because they can.
