Seriously...I was listening to a "Name that Tune" type game on a radio show once in the late 90's...and the guy who called in got this clue: "This song was one of the most popular songs of the 1970's - then they played this riff...

But Jimmy Page did create some cool riffs.

BTW, I included Whole Lotta Love in my first post, which coincidently is one of the songs LZ "borrowed". Its a Willie Dixon song...

  Actually...Not really like the Stones. The Stones always gave credit to the songs they covered, unlike LZ. They also took old bluesman on tour with them to give them publicity.
  
  It's OK to cover songs, just don't put your name on the song like Page and Plant did on early LZ albums.

I had a habit then (and still do) of looking up song authors when the band doing the song didn't write it.
I first learned of Willie Dixon that way and in doing so was exposed to a whole new world of music that I wasn't to familiar with before that.

It's funny you should mention this one Kim...I was just thinking about these guys - but they got this reaction when I saw them...

I saw Deep Purple when that album came out - it was a much anticipated show...they unfortunately made one little mistake -

Their warm-up band was ELO - who rocked the house, and was called back for several encores -

DP must have been ticked after that, or having an off night...after a few bad renditions, the crowd started chanting "Bring back ELO...Bring back ELO" - it was pretty much down hill for them after that...they almost walked off - :rolleyes:

For me, naming best guitar riff ever would be like trying to name my favorite song ever, or to pick which sister I like best . . . impossible to do. I'll post one of my favorites now and then though, and I'll start with the one below. I'll warn you though, my tastes run from classical acoustic to hard rock.

A Riff is generally a line that comes in between lyrical lines... short... filler... like the one in the squire song or at the beggining of the lenny kravitz song or like at the beginning of "ocean" led zepplin, usually played/repeated at a consistent spot in the verses or chorus... as I have always understood it. A lead is the actual guitar solo.

We all use it loosely though.

AAAAAYYYYYY! Correctamundo!!

Also you may understand it like this : It can be a transition "hook" Like billy squire routinely hits every 4-8 bars or so like on the stroke...as you have noted, or else you can look at it like "An eight bar solo can be broken down into a series of riffs".

Or you May recognize this phrase "That was a cool Lick".... A riff is a lick. A specific lick within a solo when referring to solo's and not transitional hooks and/or intro's...

Whooo hooo! Yeah forgot about riffmaster Ted... He has alot of those cool chunky low licks! The first rock song I ever learned was cat scratch fever. I remember going to this kids house and his older brother had a big marshall stack and a les paul, and he started wailing on it, and as a beginner I was so in awe...anyway, he taught the song to me on his les paul I was like WOOOOW!

  Budgie are my favourite band that never made it. Back in the 70's, when "heavy metal" was just called hard rock, Budgie were often mentioned in the same sentence as Sabbath, Zeppelin and Purple. The other three made the big time, but fame seemed to elude Budgie. However, despite their lack of fame, the influence they had on a generation of "headbangers" can't be ignored.

Thom, not to be like a broken record but... The drums are just as important as the guitar on that ocean lick. Bonam was amazing! I had a drummer who tried to emulate him...it just sounded like crud, he had a certain feel that really can only be described as amazing to me. Its hard to believe the perspective a drummer can take and just MAKE a song sometimes.

The first great riff was "You really got me" The kinks
Then come the king of the riffs, Keith Richard, this guy was playing guitar with open chord and changed everything in rock, Satisfaction,Jumping jach flash and many more.
Came the 70's and we all know Led Z was the king, my fav is a song of Physical Graffiti album(my fav album too of them), "in my time of dying" and yeah they have many more like the stones on the 60's.
Surprise me no one posted nothing about Black Sabbath... "Iron Man", just amazing!!!!
Deep Purple with "smoke on the water" was considered the best riff ever made...I love it.
The 80's Ac/dc back in black, shook me all night long ruled.
From the 90's till nowdays "enter sandman" Metallica is the great riff.
I see the 70's with the best riffs, you can just think... Don't fear the ripper....Classic.

Whateverpedia, they deserved better. I've got two albums by them. I don't even know how I came across them. I might have just bought the first one on a lark. I used to do that a lot just because I liked the artwork or the song titles intrigued me.

I once talked the manager of ELO into becoming an endorser to my site... Long story... He told me that the big spaceship they used on stage as their backdrop was dropped from an airpline into a river and has been sitting at the bottom of it for years. Dont know which river. He mentioned it but I dont remember which...
