BEATLE Kids to Form Band?

James McCartney has reached out to Sean Lennon, Dhani Harrison and Zak Starkey to create the next generation of The Beatles, the BBC reports.

msnbc.com Entertainment - Here come the sons: Will Beatles' kids form own band?

What do you think? Is the means in the genes?

And what do you call the Band? The Fab 4.1?

(I know of one warrior who will chime in...)

When I first read the post I thought it was a late April Fools joke. Genius has been known to skip a generation so I'll have to wait and hear.

When I saw the headline...I did too. I thought it must be some kind of put on -

Interesting to say the least. I have heard Dhani and Zak play, never James, and Sean...I don't know. The other Lennon, Julian, does sound eerily like his Dad - and they do resemble them. But it would be very hard to recreate in fact without becoming a novelty - those are very big shoes to fill...

Gonna be a huge flop. Stuff like this always is. Because no one is going to listen or care that they are the son's of the Beatles unless they ROCK.

Yeah,I was going to say ZAk actually can play.
And honestly I have heard more about McCartney's daughter than his son, this kid James.
Dhani, again, never heard of him or heard him play,so don't know, but if I was gpoing to get a Lennon it definitely would have been Julian.

I first heard Dhani in a tribute to George, and he was playing with some heavyweights, so maybe he was covered, but seemed to keep up. James McCartney, like you say, he may be more visible in the UK, but Stella definitely gets more press...I'll have to even see if I can find a clip.
I mean, if you were the son of these guys, how could you not want to learn a thing or two?
Sean, unfortunately, did not have that luxury...

Funny - Julian Lennon doesn't even get mentioned -

The Beatles still top many all time lists even after all these years so I doubt they can even begin to compete with that however, if they have talent, they might have their own level of success.

It really depends on their own sound and skills and not who they are related to.

Getting the middle-aged children of elderly or deceased pop stars to form a band? Oooh, exciting.

  • I saw a clip once, of Paul showing kids how easy it is to make music, and write a song...and they built a song right there on the spot. That was pretty neat - but then again, he learned from George Martin, so he had that going for him...:p

If he can do that with those kids...he sure as heck could do the same with his own...

Sounds like this was dreamed up in the marketing department of a record company. I guess we'll know for sure if they do Beatles covers.

Perhaps the most charming aspect of the Beatles was that they were just young regular average-looking guys in their twenties from a working-class city -- not privileged -- who formed a band and composed songs that put magic into everyday things. I could be wrong, but I don't think passing the Beatles mantle like inherited royalty to their privileged 30-something, 40-something children has the same charm, and is not likely to cut it with the public. But, who knows, maybe I'll soon be seeing their faces plastered all over tabloids like Kim Kardashian.

I agree, nowhere near. It might be a crazy analogy...but I was watching Top Gear the other day, and the challenge was, the guys had 3 little old ladies as their team driver. This lady gets into the Lamborghini...and she's petrified - she drives 30 mph...had no idea what the machine can do...way out of her league.

It sort of like that, if The Beatles are the Lambo, and these guys are the Little Old Lady...

It was the sum of their parts...many can argue, but there are better musicians technically, there are singers with better range, and some may even argue better songwriters...they can even imitate The Beatles like 'Rain', but these 4 lads equaled The Beatles, and that chemistry cannot be duplicated quite the same again.

If they try to be like the Beatles, or if people expect them to be like the Beatles, then everyone will probably be disappointed. If they try to be themselves, and people don't expect them to be like their famous parents, they might make a name for themselves in their own right.

But, since James reached out to the other Beatle kids, it leads one to think they might be trying to cash in on their parents fame, and if so, I won't be surprise to see it crash and burn.

Well, if they stay with an 'insect' theme, seeing as how John liked New York, they could call themselves "The Bedbugs" -

I'm not so sure this is a bad idea. These guys might just be a product of their time and environment, too? I'm thinking in the flow of current events, their ideology is probably relevant as hell.

If I close my eyes, I can see a couple of these guys getting together at some family gathering and starting to talk about their music, politics, and ideologies. I'm not thinking it's a case of kids trying to suck of parents fame. I think it is kids that respect who their parents were/are and what they stood for. I think they they are just as authentic as any other guys meeting up and having an idea to get together and do something.

I hope they rock our butts off - and I hope they are as relevant to our times as their parents were to theirs. I am looking forward to seeing them perform. They won't be their parents. But I'm thinking they have the background to be compelling.

      Julian Lennon is very good.
And, there are a lot actors children who have followed very well in their parents footsteps. Carrie Fisher , Laura Dern, and Jaime Lee Curtis come to mind.

I know Zak is a very good drummer. Maybe better than Ringo. (Who really is a great drummer despite his critics).
And, although he looks like 'Frankenpaul', (sorry, that's kind of mean), I believe it's very probably that they could do very well.

I thought saw a post that said the Beatles music was simple.
      That's wrong.
For one thing their unique harmonies in their early tunes came from 'inverted' chords.
Then, later, when they were pretty much a studio band, George Martin became their arranger. His background was in symphony.
The "circus" sound in Mr. Kyte was created by recording the tune on an organ, then re-recording it backwords.
The Beatles are the most ingenius writers ever for making genius sound simple.

I was going to point it out yesterday (must have been the song), but ZAK did play for The Who, and Moonie was a close friend of Ringo's...but the picture I saw of Zak Starkey looked a LOT like Keith Moon...'course it might just be a coincidence...you know the other thread...1 out of 25 fathers...Liverpool and all -

I still love that great Lennon line though, when Ringo won world's best drummer or some such, and a reporter asked John if he agreed Ringo was the best drummer in the world...John replied: "He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles!"

Apparently, they have all kept in music. If they had help from their fathers, earlier, they COULD maybe be better. The beatles songs really WERE simple. Yesterday actually came about from a tune to tune a guitar.
