    Yes, Give Them Hell Harry was quite a character.


    Since no president is perfect...


    - Some say he shouldn't have dropped the bomb as it was unnecessary.

    - He shouldn't have followed the Brits around like a puppy when it came to foreign policy.



    Very Interesting...

    - I wonder why Ike and Harry reportedly didn't like each other so much that Ike reportedly refused to have the traditional tea with Harry and wife before being sworn in.


    - After a black soldier - in uniform, was lynched somewhere in the south, President Truman ordered the integration of the military.


    - He fired General McArthur when Mc got out of line.


    BTW...


    The thought of any former US President going without a decent pension and some secret service protection for the rest of their life is simply ludicrous to me.

      Maybe we'll never know the absolute truth but some people say the Japanese were begging to surrender but we didn't want to listen.

    Some people say we droped the first bomb, and asked them to surrender, but they refused. Once the second bomb was dropped, they finally gave up.

    The people may have wanted to surrender, but the Warriors and the Emperor had to
    give the final switch from TORA TORA TORA, to We Had Enough.

    I refuse to believe that the Japanese were begging us to accept their surrender, and we
    went ahead and bropped two Atomic Bombs just because we could do it.

        The emperor was viewed as a god by the people, the thought of surrender was not on the God agenda! It was a first defeat of Japan in any war.

        Fight to the death was the indoctrination of the Japanese people. This was evident as they would prefer to die for the Emperor by suicide if necessary rather than being captured. Very hard for them to surrender when this is their mindset. Was Truman right?



        Now, Truman did not KNOW the Japanese would surrender. He knew that the Japanese would surrender if the emperor remained in charge. However, this was not part of UNconditional Surrender. And the US didn't want the emperor in charge. So, to get the Japanese to accept the Allies as the rulers of Japan after the war Truman refused to discuss it.

          If my memory is correct, Emp. Hirohito wanted to surrender. It was Gen. Tojo that wanted to fight to the end.

          And it's a very complicated situation...There were factors such as Russia involved in the decision. Had the war in the Pacific continued, it's very possible that Russia would have invaded and taken over Japan. Using nukes was a signal for Russia to stay out. And the Japanese prospered under US "control"...I doubt they would have done as well under the USSR/Russia.

          How many Allied and Japanese would have lost their lives if Japan continued to fight? Most estimates are in the millions...

          Not to mention, Japan was in a race to develope nukes themselves and likely would have used them on us, if they could have...Plus, they attacked Pearl Harbor without cause. When you draw first blood, you open yourself up to all sorts of bad things to happen.

            that`s very true Kurt. All round it was a very tough decision for any man / group of men in the military. On the surface it seems horrific to blast civilian lives off the surface of the earth with two bombs....but the consequences were would have been worse if every Japanese person were adamant they would fight to the end....Russia looming in the back ground on top of all that?

            However, all done and said, Harry Truman was condemned by some and commended by others for making the decision to drop the bombs. His honesty stands out as a president, even though his decisions at times may have given the wrong signals to some people, ( this is politics for you) his upstanding character and devotion to do what he thought was right for the american people was exemplary as a man and politician.
