Johnny Depp Wants to Play Composer Harry Partch

"...I wouldn’t mind slipping into the skin and bones of Harry Partch. One of our greatest, pioneering artists, who is rarely given the respect, let alone the appreciation, that he so richly deserves.”
Composer Harry Partch was an American phenomenon. He spent some years living as a traveling hobo during the Great Depression and that featured in his compositions. Feeling that the usual tuning system for music was too limited, he developed a unique tuning system with many more notes than the standard Western tuning system. An opinionated man with a fierce temper, he frequently got into conflicts with the mainstream musical establishment. He also constructed a whole bunch of instruments to meet the demands of his tuning system. Part of his musical outlook was that it should be part of theatrical performances on stage, with the musicians being the actors. Very odd stuff. The unusual performances usually sold out.
He was a brilliant and innovative pioneer of a new musical form that has its hardcore aficionados but never took off with mainstream audiences, probably because it sounded nasty.
