Johnny Depp Wants to Play Composer Harry Partch

Any Harry Partch fans here? Johnny Depp expressed interest in playing him in a movie. I actually imagined that Johnny Depp would be a Harry Partch fan and would be an interesting choice to play him in a movie. Turns out I was right:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/15/bo.../up-front.html

"...I wouldn’t mind slipping into the skin and bones of Harry Partch. One of our greatest, pioneering artists, who is rarely given the respect, let alone the appreciation, that he so richly deserves.”

Composer Harry Partch was an American phenomenon. He spent some years living as a traveling hobo during the Great Depression and that featured in his compositions. Feeling that the usual tuning system for music was too limited, he developed a unique tuning system with many more notes than the standard Western tuning system. An opinionated man with a fierce temper, he frequently got into conflicts with the mainstream musical establishment. He also constructed a whole bunch of instruments to meet the demands of his tuning system. Part of his musical outlook was that it should be part of theatrical performances on stage, with the musicians being the actors. Very odd stuff. The unusual performances usually sold out.

He was a brilliant and innovative pioneer of a new musical form that has its hardcore aficionados but never took off with mainstream audiences, probably because it sounded nasty.

He's a very versatile actor, and can be very convincing when he keeps a lid on the quirkiness.

Do tell what you consider his quirkiness.

I haven't noticed anything quirky about him at all but that could be because I'm blinded by his dashing good looks. :p

What makes him a great actor sometimes makes him stretch things too far, eg how he portrayed Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow. Still, entertaining.

Now that you mention it, he did the same in Edward Scissorhands too.

            I've been unblinded, alas! :p

Not sure why I recall it as nasty sounding. It is certainly harder to play than standard tuning, thus all to easy to make it sound nasty. The music is actually pretty cool and nice on the ears. Still, it's too strange and complex to capture the public imagination, I suspect.

A movie about the composer and his life could well be a hit since it was full of the elements that make good drama: a memorable protagonist with a strong goal, setbacks, underdog vs establishment etc.

More about Harry Partch and the instruments. It would be interesting to see how "Hollywood" would present the story and how Johnny Depp would portray the character. Harry Partch was a creative genius and unique American maverick.

Ah Terra - you can't have missed his more macrabre side? Why else would he chose some of the roles he does. In my view this adds mystery to a dashing, intelligent, and extremely sexy man, though. I feel sorry for any woman he touches - she would be ruined for anyone else for a lifetime.

  • Funny - I read today that Disney is currently making ANOTHER remake of The Lone Ranger, with Depp playing "Tonto"...and Armie Hammer playing 'TLR' (John Reid)?

Funny Depp would play 2nd banana...especially when you're literally playing the 'fool'...

I know Johnny is a good actor and all, but, really, the women's response here...,

....and they say men are shallow, go figure.

Have you ever heard of the phrase "eye candy"? Can't you think of an actress you find attractive and enjoy gazing at?

There's nothing wrong with recognizing someone nicely put together and admiring that handiwork from afar.
