Hey, does anybody watch Olympic football? And what team do you support? Let's discuss some interesting moments and games here as well

I do not watch Olympic football, but I heard or read somewhere (can't remember) that they may get rid of it after this Olympiad due to waining support due to the popularity of the World Cup.

Well, i actually thought before that there will be the same teams that were in Euro 2012. However i found out that there are U23 teams. Anyways it is pretty fun to watch, still a lot of dramatic moments

Thing is no countries Football Association care about the Olympics. And for us in the UK there is actually no such thing as a team GB so the whole thing is meaningless. England, Scotland and Wales were not allowed to play as individual countries by the Olympic Committee so this mish mash team were invented.

We are only taking part in it this time because we are hosting it.

Having said that I watched them play UAE last night and it was less boring than watching the real England team play in my mind even though it seemed amateurish. Seemed more fun.

Yea, jimbo13, overall skill of the teams really look more amateurish: team of Spain is a pale copy of its main team. Yea, i was pretty surprised when i saw team of Great Britain, i thought that there will be England.

However not all teams look less skilled than their main country team. For example, Brazil looks pretty good.

  • If anyone in any country is a standout player, they have probably been recruited by a professional team somewhere else in the world...what's the point of having them come back to 'represent' their country other than to gain advantage? Isn't the whole point of the Olympics supposed to be athletes of amature standing?

For instance, when someone says Rafi Nadal, will not be able to compete in tennis in the Olympics, how is it he is allowed to in the first place? - The USA basketball team is comprised of professionals like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James...how is this fair?

These professionals may or may not have had the chance to compete in an Olympics Games - but should they not relinquish the chance when they turn professional?

They took away Jim Thorpe's medals because he mistakenly played minor-league baseball for $2 a game...when did it become OK?

Not anymore and hasn't been for a while. Look at the "Dream Team."

I agree with you in sentiment, though.
