Tear gas/pepper spray is very effective protection from dogs.

The police need to really watch out, as shooting dogs isn't very good for public relations.

Cops helping fellow cop will hurt case | WOOD TV8
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) - Despite a preliminary blood-alcohol level of .285 -- well above the limit for "super drunk driving" -- a Battle Creek officer likely couldn't face that charge because of the actions of his co-workers, said a former Battle Creek assistant city attorney.
Battle Creek Officer William Gensch was driving drunk, about 100 mph, with an even drunker officer in the passenger seat when he slammed into mailboxes, signs and a curb on West Michigan Avenue near Custer Road. It happened about 2:30 a.m. on July 31.

But what if a dangerous dogs tries to attack you and you have a gun in your hands and no time to run or use the tear gas? Would you let the dog eat you (because these kind of dogs can eat you, really.)?

And what if you miss the dog and shoot an innocent child bystander?

There's a million "what ifs"...In this case the cop was probably right to shoot the dog. It was obviously attacking the cop. But if the cop missed, he could have killed one of the bystanders.

Agreed. That would have been very bad. I just think that this is one of those moments when you can't think, just act.

I'm sorry - this video leaves me with more questions than answers. What was the guy laying on the sidewalk for? Was he asleep or passed out? The dog acted like he was protecting the guy from people approaching him. What was wrong that he didn't wake up during that whole incident? This whole thing is just too weird.

      Sal,

According to the story, the guy ways having a seizure and was passed out from that. What I don't understand though... is why did the cops have their guns drawn, if the dog was the only threat? The only thing they should have had "drawn" is their pepper spray!

Brandon NYC cops play by their own rules.
For example in NYS possession of less then 7/8 of an oz. of Cannabis gets you an appearance ticket unless it's viewable in public. Any cop anywhere in the state will just give you the ticket if you give them the weed. In NYC they will arrest you because when you give them the weed it's 'viewable in public'.http://www.suntimes.com/news/nation/...r-for-pot.html
