how do you write, funny ?

I am being serious. I have a very dry, very sarcastic sense of humor.

Some might even call it dark.

I am not a writer, in any stretch of the imagination, and when i try to
say some thing witty on a thread, or even on skype

people wind thinking i am am the worlds biggest A-Hole.

I know this is due to how , or what i write,
can any one give me a few tips, or point me to some site
where i can learn?

Ken - before you go into major contortions - try the smilies. It's hard for anyone who is not familiar with a person's sense of humor to always tell if someone is joking or not.

Teaching someone "humor" is not that simple. There are whole college courses on just specific aspects. Some people are just better at it than others. In black and white even people who are hilarious in person don't always shine through when they want to.

Ken, interesting question. Not sure if I can answer it but I'll try.

First though, let me say that seldom will everyone think you're funny. What's funny to one person is dumb to another. I remember a couple emails I got a few years back in regards to a new humor page I just posted. One person wrote to say I should quit trying to be funny because I didn't get it. I was thinking about taking the page down when another email came in from another guy who told me it was the funniest thing he'd ever read.

    Having said that...

Sarcasm and dry humor may be two of the most difficult types of humor to pull off in print. Just your luck, eh? Part of being funny online is the reader's familiarity with you. The more the audience knows and "gets" your personality, the more they'll get your humor.

If people think you're being an arse when you're trying to be funny they're not getting it. The use of emoticons to "tip the audience off" could be important for you. Since we can't hear the tone of your voice or see your facial expressions, and have limited familiarity with your personality, that visual clue may be all the "extra something" you need.

Many find the unexpected funny. Catching people by surprise was a key to the humor I used in my web design books. I've had teachers and students write to thank me for including the humor. Mostly I was just being silly, but because it was unexpected (but not inappropriate), it caught people off guard and that seemed to work.

Guess that's all I have for now. If something else comes to mind I'll be back.

    Good luck.

PS - One last thing ... try wearing your underwear on your head. Sometimes if we feel funny it helps us to be funny.

Just kidding! Did that catch you buy surprise?

I was thinking the same thing, lol!

But as Dennis said, now imaginations are running rampant. Do we wear silk, satin and lace? Cotton? Briefs, bikinis, thongs, g-strings? Solids or prints? Animal, floral, symbols, sayings, characters? Bright colors or pastels? Or granny panties!

I've handled lots of undies in my day.

After seeing some of those candid Walmart pics where you often see people's undies in public I'm up for just about anything. I think we should start a show me yer undies thread. Who's in?

            Ken,

Dennis and Sal have given you some great tips. The unexpected is a highly effective comedy tool, as is the incongruous. And misdirection is one of the best ways of increasing their impact.

To use misdirection, you first set up a situation or premise, then confound the readers' likely expectation.

There's much talk about the "rule of three" in such a set-up. Whether that's because of the mind's average attention span or some deeper psychological reasons, it does seem to work, and you'll often see examples of this technique in comedy writing. A (much) shortened version would be the famous "formula for success" offered by J. Paul Getty:

            1) Get up early

            2) Work hard

            3) Strike oil

Another crucial tool is your editing. This is the written equivalent of the comic's timing which is the essence of good humor. Arranging the funny bits in the optimum order on the page can make or break your comedy writing. In general, you'll want to place the funniest word at the end of a sentence and end the paragraph with your funniest sentence, but experiment with your own writing for the most effective placement. Find some written jokes that appeal to you and study their structure; could you improve the set-up to increase the impact of the punchline?

Also, some words are just intrinsically funnier than others. Try using a thesaurus to substitute mundane-sounding words with punchier ones. Words starting with a "k" sound tend to be quite effective (Quack, Kicker, Krusty The Clown) but again, try out different words for yourself.

It's already been mentioned that as your audience gets to know you, they'll come to recognize your style and be more receptive to your humor. But it's equally important that you get to know your audience. Nothing is likely to kill humor more that a too obvious, heavy-handed approach. Far better to keep your humorous attempts on the subtle side, encouraging your readers to join the dots. The more you know your audience, the easier it will become to get the pitch right.

Finally, and as a rule of thumb, remember that less is more. Don't try to cram as many jokes as you can into every paragraph. One or two funny lines per post or page of writing is often all you'll need, as long as the set-up has been well structured and the lines are actually funny and fit the context of the piece.

            Frank

Frank beat me to the punch related to damn near everything I was going to add (Damn you, Frank, for being such a genius), so I'll add this:

Ken, I have an extremely dry, sarcastic, dark sense of humor in the RL, some have called it "caustic" (that was in my younger years, though).

I've found that online I have to back off a bit on the sarcasm because the receiver of my razor wit can't see the grin on my face (such as here). Us sarcastic bastiches learn almost unconsciously to counterweight what we say with facial expressions that tell the receiver we're only kidding. Otherwise, we'd get punched in the mouth much more frequently.

A sarcastic joke usually has other angles. See if you can find one that more appropriately fits the medium. I'll tell you this, though -- sometimes you lose the sharpness of the joke without the sarcasm. In those cases, I typically either just go full steam ahead or bail on the joke entirely.

Timing. Misdirection. Absurdity. Fish out of water. Seemingly Incongruous patterns that can be made congruous. There's your bread and butter.

Years ago I was in Toastmasters. They give you a manual with twelve assignments. With each one you're supposed to deliver a short speech relating to the assignment. One is to evoke emotion. The first on is an intro speech where you tell your group who you are, etc.

One of the last ones is to give a humorous talk. I had no idea what to talk about. And then it came to me. I talked about some absurd stuff I did as a kid. All true but borderline unbelievable. If I were to write about it I believe people would be in stitches because it's actually weirder than life. A little preview.

When I was 13 I loved to go fishing. But as a city kid I had to take like three buses to get to the water. On this particular fishing trip I had a torn ligament in my right knee so I had a heavy straight plaster cast on my leg from thigh to ankle. I was with a friend. He caught a catfish that day. While the fish was flipping around on the shore I went to step on it.

I was moving all about trying to step on this fish and finally did. I got him with my right foot, the leg with the cast on it. My sneaker was worn pretty thin and the sharp dorsal fin of the fish punctured the sole of my sneaker and got deeply embedded in the pad of my foot. Something I learned that day was the catfish have opposing barbs on their dorsal fin. So it was almost impossible to get that sucker out because it was so deeply embedded.

Okay, that's the setup. Now I describe how I had to travel 25 miles home on public transportation with a catfish stuck to my right foot. It was crazy. People looking at me on each of the buses I had to catch. My friend sitting as far away from me as possible trying to hide and not admit we were together. One of the bus drivers wanting to call the cops or an ambulance or whatever. Three hours of craziness. I went right to my family doctor's office (in his house) and disturbed his dinner so he could take this fish off my foot. He was a really nice guy and asked if I wanted his wife to fry it up for me.

When I told this story in Toastmasters people were almost peeing in their pants. Well, they said they were.

Anyway, if you want to write funny, look for weird, true-to-life stuff and write about it. It doesn't have to be your stuff. It doesn't even have to be true.

Hey, Ken, I have that trouble too, sometimes. Over the years I think I have learned not to be sarcastic in my humour, but my humour is often "dry" and people don't always recognize it as such.

I really like the suggestions to use smilies, especially Happy Face Smilie. Once people get to know your style, it's not so bad.

Here's something related to some of the discussions going on here about "undies."

Years ago I was publishing a small print newsletter for home business enthusiasts and I had a section I called "The Publisher's Shorts." I would feature short blurbs about various marketers and their business interests. The sub-text in each column said something like, "Here's how to get into the Publisher's Shorts." (Oh! Almost forgot. I included a cartoon picture of a pair of men's polka dot boxer shorts.)

That was my attempt at humour, but I had some readers who didn't think it was appropriate!

You have to be yourself in your writing, but at the same time I think you do need to be somewhat sensitive to the audience that will be reading your words.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is in a way the same with humor, everyone laughs at different things. But if you have problems with your sense of humor on skype or on threads, just use smilies at least until the other people know you enough to know you are joking.

The "headings" are in different locations depending on the version of Word you have. If you have Windows 7, it comes with Word Starter. I called it a "lite" version because it has a limited set of features. It's also ad supported. You'd think if it's ad supported they'd give you the full version, but that's another story.

Anyway, if Word has an advertisement in the lower right-hand corner (often for a Microsoft product) you likely have the Starter version. If not, if I remember correctly, click Help > About on the toolbar to find which version you have.

Ah - properties. No it's 2000. I just found the toolbar that lets me do bold without having to go to the menu for the font feature. OO is just so much better than MS in my view. It's user-friendly enough for me to use expertly - and MS seems to want to be an elitist tool.

Laura gave me the mac version rundown and I think it's gonna be the same for this one - close enough anyhow. But the directions for Kindle say all I have to do is highlight and make it a header and they take care of the rest instead of me having to do all the anchoring etc. and a toc. I think they meant that a navigator will show the headings like ms does. That's all I really want. If they can navigate, they don't need to scroll through a TOC page.

There is no way to learn someone elses humor. The only thing you can do is think about something that makes you laugh and then write it down. If what you wrote makes you laugh, then you have written something funny. If other people do not find it funny, that is their loss.

Let me give you an example of something that I find funny:

I wanted to write something funny on this thread, but all I could think about was my butt. I guess that is funny...or at least it sounds funny to me.

Is that just childish? Maybe. But it makes me laugh.
