You can't get a $500 Vaio that's decent (they are over priced). For around $500, you should take a look at what sales they have at Bestbuy (or the equivalent in your area/city/state/country). If you're willing to wait, Christmas will be a good time to for sales to pop up.

  I use a Vaio - 15.5" - and love it. Got it for less than $500 last December on sale (which is a great time to buy a laptop) and it has everything I need. Normally I think this one sells for a little less than $700.
  
  It's not lightweight but I don't carry mine with me a lot so didn't matter to me.

yup, firctly you need to think about purpose for what you will use it. I personally would go for the most powerfull pc what I can get for the money Also maybe someone knows how good is windows 8 ?
