Sears' demise had nothing to do with Ayn Rand philosophies. It had more to do with The Free Trade Act and the rise of WalMart. - Also the slow death of the American Mall as we once knew it. Many retailers died a similar slow death... Borders, Blockbuster, Foleys, etc.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

No - but I believe she stayed at a holiday inn last night.

Small dollar stores are the new five & dime stores that were popular in the early 1900's, these small dollar stores can be ran with 1-2 employees per shift, low wages, no benefits. It's the new cash cow. Lower tax base & buildings that go where the traffic is (residential neighborhoods).

Even Walmart has spotted the new dollar store trends.

Right now (today) Walmart is positioned to crush Dollar General If they wanted to, by Walmart having small stores in high traffic neighborhoods & letting that traffic buy online at walmart.com, then free shipping to a local neighborhood smaller store.

Meanwhile, Wal-Mart, which has built its reputation for being a low-cost operator, plans to add about the same square footage next year as it did in the current fiscal year but with fewer dollars spent. In the U.S., it will be focusing in rolling out more Neighborhood Markets, its small format stores that offer perishable food, household supplies and beauty aids as well as a pharmacy.
Sears is stuck in 1982, they'll eventually die out like a lot of their small local franchise stores have already done. They screwed up their small local franchise stores by only selling expensive items (stoves, fridge, mowers, etc...) when they should have been selling things that people buy everyday (clothes, food, etc...).

Saying they are stuck in 1982 is very kind. They are poor merchandisers, even worse marketers and in no way price competitive. When I saw the K-mart "Ship my pants" commercial I told my friends that I believe that was the first thing they had done well in 30 years. The article is just another of those hit pieces sites like Salon do to take any shot they can at Rand.

And, exactly, what is the point of the question?

Nope, wasn't Rand....was the idiot who thought theory and philosophy were the same as knowledge and competence.

There is a Sears store in a small mall across from the Lowe's store I use - it truly is a sad place. I went there after pricing a freezer at Lowe's - found the same model at Sears priced 25% higher and the employees outnumbered the customers in the store. Never went back to that store.
