    I used to know someone who did this ("legally") for a couple cancer patients who had their doctor's recommendation here in California. Unfortunately for him, he found out the hard way that the question of whether or not it's "legal" even with a doctor's recommendation is still open for debate, and when the cops find the plants they really don't care what kind of paperwork you have.

    Was it legal? According to state law, yes it was. Does it matter if it's legal? Not unless you have a really good lawyer. In this guy's case.. he couldn't afford a good lawyer and the "public defender" convinced him that it was in his best interest to take a plea bargain.
