    Here's one thing for sure...

If you are generating positive ROI you can generate as many leads as your prepared to re-invest into the system.

As for research I prefer to do my own.

Start something...pay for traffic...start split testing...off you go.

Well yes. But I went back to school. I need to make a marketing plan. One of the goals I am setting is creating more leads. So, I was wondering how many leads would be exceptional.

It may in a way be semantics I am sure. I perceive a flaw in the question. its not how many CAN a small business create, but rather how many do they NEED to create.

The first number you need to know is what the revenue target is. From here you then need to understand how much by percentage is needed in the activity you are working with. Be it Marketing efforts, Sales Prospecting, referrals etc. I personally look and work with these different avenues separately. You can lump it all together but I find you end up with a skewed perception of what is going on where.

Being able to separate and focus each effort separately gives you a better idea of where you have room for improvement. IE how much time are you placing towards a specific effort and how much return is coming from it.

You then want to assign a percentage of revenue to each incoming sales category. you are going to school for marketing so we will say that 80% is going to come from marketing efforts. you need $100,000 in sales a month over all. Marketing is going to produce 80% of that or $80,000.

How much is your average sale? we will keep it easy and say that its $10,000. Marketing needs to make $80,000 so you need to produce 8 sales.

You now need to look at your conversion rate. we will say for marketing it is 1%. You need 8 sales, and at 1% conversion that means you need to bring in 800 leads / prospects ( depending on which term you use ) to get to your sales number.

      Hope that Helps!
