yes something like that......a product or a service.

    I don't understand your question...

Are you seeking a list of targeted names and addresses for your offer?
If you are, then google "mailing list brokers" and you'll find a bunch of list brokers to choose from. From there you can narrow down your criteria and rent a list of names.

Or, are you asking how to write a direct response mail piece, with a call to action that directs them to a website? Because that's a whole different question.

    Can you clarify your question...

Well, it looks like Animal beat me to it. (That'll do, Donkey... That'll do...)

So I'll just reiterate what he said...

What have they previously bought? Sell them something similar, or something complimentary to what you know they already buy.

If it's a snail mail list, are you sure they'll buy online...?

As for products/services, what have they previously bought? Sell them something similar.

Geez Donkey, of course they will. You have been spending too much time in the barn! Get out in the fields for a bit and see what's going on!.

IMHO that can't be assumed. I would advise OP to do small, low cost tests before spending too much on direct mail.

I am a fan of direct mail, but you need to be strategic about it.

I would suggest if they've bought online before, then OP should stick to email...

And rather than more perfume, think in terms of other things that go with perfume, in particular things that go with the particular brand of perfume they've previously bought...

Im looking to do a offline campaign. Can you recommend good place to buy direct mail leads? Have been warned against "wilsonlist". Any recommendations?
          {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[11519863].message }}
  • If it's a consumer list I'd run a mass-market offer like:

    - Insurance (Get a quote type, Lead gen)
    - Credit Card (Get a quote type, Lead gen)
    - Weight Loss products or digital products

Additionally, I'd laser-focus the copy. Make it SUPER LOCAL...

    Example:

Do NOT send out the mass mail randomly trying to sell car insurance...
Better: "Car Owners in New York can claim a bonus when signing up here..."
Even Better: "Car Owners in Brooklyn..."

Just brainstorming here, but I guess you get the point. MASS market offers, HYPER LOCAL.

And if it's business 2 business leads, I'd actually do the exact same, just change the "angle/story"..."This is how business owners in Brooklyn can..."

    Hope this helps!

With direct mail, you have their attention...and you are competition free at that moment.

When you direct them to go online, you now open them up to the idea of searching online for what you sell.

If you want them to go online, advertise online. It's far cheaper than by mail, and they are used to being online...maybe buying online.

But direct mail? I'd have them call a toll free number, or mail in a postcard for a free report (or any other lead generation offer). Maybe make the website a third alternative.

Is it a compiled list, or a buyer list?

If it's a buyer list, what did they buy to get on the list? Was it by direct mail? Did they go online to buy it? Were they directed to a website before?

If they bought something, what would they need now that they have the first offer?

What do you already know about them?

I could sell more perfume somehow considering it's a consumable and people like multiple scents?

Then you should sell them perfume online. If they didn't originally go from a direct mail piece to online...and just went directly online...you are taking them out of their comfort zone with direct mail...and spending lots of money you don't have to.

Do you have their e-mail address? If you do, that's how you start the offer.

If you don't have an e-mail list, but you do have a phone number, call them (assuming they spent a lot of money...hundreds at least)

But any direct mail, no matter how you do it, is going to cost you enough that this will be a gamble.

Why not try to work with the original seller, and make an offer to those names...and split the profits?

Perfume is a good way to go. Especially if they got on your list due to buying it.

So definitely test your perfume offer. Because with a good offer, and some good copy, there's a high probability to see some good response rates.

But a hot buyers list is a valuable asset. So maybe you can also think of something parallel, that would be complimentary to their purchase?

Let me help get you started with a little creative brain exercise...

Why do women wear perfume...? So they can smell nice.

Why do they want to smell nice...? So they can feel confident around other people. (I've asked many women why they wear perfume, and I've never had a single one tell me they wear it when they're spending the evening alone, in sweatpants, on the couch)

Why do they want to feel confident around other people? So they can feel socially accepted, and / or so they can be more attractive to other people (perhaps a sexual partner?)

What else can give a woman the feeling of confidence and attractiveness? (OK... I got you started, so I'll let you take it from here...) Of course, this all assumes it was women who made the purchase, and not men buying the perfume for the woman in their life? (If was men who made the purchase, then we'd need to look at it from a third party angle)

Also keep the price point in mind. If they bought $15 an ounce perfume, then costume jewelry might be a good compliment. But if they bought $1500 perfume, then you probably don't want to try selling them plastic beads on a neckchain.

So definitely test your perfume offer. And as long as you have the list, maybe you could also test something complimentary (for the discerning lady who likes to feel confident and attractive in public).

      Anyway, something to think about.

      Good luck with your promotion...

Brilliant, and quite a few copywriting ideas as well.

"What else can give a woman the feeling of confidence and attractiveness?"

That's it! I know nothing about appealing to women (ask my wife). But I know what insecure vain men like. A man that buys hair plugs is the kind of man that buys dental implants, custom suits, fine cigars and wine, joins online dating services, and drives a car that he hopes will get him laid.

What else makes a woman feel attractive? What also matters is that this woman is in the buying mood to satisfy that itch. So new buyers (I know you know this) are far better.

Yeah, me neither. After 20 years of marriage the only thing I know about appealing to women is when I say "Hi honey, I brought home a paycheck."

I'm familiar with this one. When I was younger, my 1973 Dodge Dart with the rusty doors had all the ladies turning their heads (Unfortunately they were turning their heads away from me and towards my friend with the souped-up Camaro )

Yeah, I'm surprised more of them aren't turning towards the empowerment angle.

Something like... "It's your turn to be in power, and Animal44 cosmetics are with you all the way!"

I feel like snail mail targeting defeats the purpose of utilizing the world wide web for marketing/advertising. Snail mail is a very small, local target. If you're selling on the internet you're doing yourself a disservice by only marketing to a small local area, especially if it is a product, rather than a service.

      Hello sgalla

I mostly disagree. We are a large Agency and we use Direct Mail to help promote our online marketing services.

Why does it have to be a "small local target area"? We cover the whole of England and into the US with our services.

If you are focused, direct mail allows you to stand out from the crowd. Most (business's or individuals) receive a hand full of paper mail each day compared to usually hundreds of emails. Letters or packages are physical, they will attract more attention than emails or other online advertising.

If you are creative you can really attract attention. We stole this idea for getting appointments with potential high value clients from our friend Oli Luke who is a UK Direct Marketing specialist. We mail a small box or package to the Company CEO, it contains a mobile (cell) phone programmed with my phone number and a hand written invitation for them to call me. We send a fairly expensive Galaxy S smart phone as we are looking to sell a £10K per month service, but Oli sends out a low cost Nokia phone costing less than £20. Two months ago we mailed 10 phones, received 8 callbacks which resulted in 6 appointments and 6 contracts.

If you are selling a reasonably low cost product I would agree with you that email marketing may be more effective.

      Cheers
      Lindy

  • It depends on who's on the list and what they bought. I know of a local store who share their list with local restaurants and other stores. But it makes sense because they're working with a a community that has a shared market. The marketing mail would be welcome.

    Good afternoon sameolesong,

First, I am curious, the names and addresses you mentioned, are they names and addresses that you assembled or are they list of names and addresses you purchased from a company?

I will be waiting for you reply to continue this conversation.

You're going to have to study the offline demographic you want to target to see if they even go online to buy stuff. Are they in their 20's? Then directing them online is no biggy. But if they're age 60+ then they may shy away from going online to place an order. This age group is more open to dialing a phone number to place an order.

Firstly, snail mail them with some sort of gift that pricks their interest - maybe make it so when it arrives they can feel there is something inside. You could make this something to do with perfume - then inside have a card and list the great offers you have on your website - this will then stop them from searching for other vendors and type your site directly into the browser

The best way to market your product these days is digitally. I don't think physical marketing works anymore unless its a B2B business.

I agree with Davob, first send them a gift, take it slow, it might be a long process but it will bring more customers and will convert more.
