Why do so many businesses have unclaimed Google Places listing?

Most businesses don't know that Google gave them a listing.

A lot of businesses even if they have seen they have one, don't know what they can do or add to it. They may see it and think, ok, I show up, it must be done already. They don't know what claiming it can do for them.

I think a better question would be... What do you do when you run across a business with an unclaimed listing?

      Good Luck OP!

I would give the business owner a call and spend 5 minutes talking to them about how they can claim their listing for free and possibly get a few leads. Wait at least a few minutes before mentioning that you can optimize their listing for a monthly fee. As always free information given in a warm manner will develop relationships.

That actually makes a lot of sense. The businesses would probably appreciate the fact that you taught them something new and want to learn more.

As stated earlier in the thread alot of businesses have no idea about google places, how it works, or that it even exists.

You will sometimes hear of people claiming these listings then selling them to the owner, however, I think it would be best to call up the business and try to sell them on how you can optimize it for them and what it can do for their business!

It could be another way to make some pretty easy money if you're smart about it!

These are given out by Google as they discover "new" businesses. Most of the time they are horribly incomplete and typically have no website included.

I agree with the others, these are some of my best prospects for new clients.
