Google Places Axing Reviews From Other Sources

This just in from the Google LatLong blog:

"Based on careful thought about the future direction of Place pages, and feedback we've heard over the past few months, review snippets from other web sources have now been removed from Place pages. Rating and review counts reflect only those that've been written by fellow Google users, and as part of our continued commitment to helping you find what you want on the web, we're continuing to provide links to other review sites so you can get a comprehensive view of locations across the globe."

They have also made it easier to post reviews and upload photos on the consumer's end.

Thoughts?

I like the look of Place pages a lot better now. It is more streamlined and clean.

When looking for reviews I put much more trust into Yelp though. There are too many anonymous reviews in Google Places. I have also noticed my experience at different venues is much more aligned with Yelp than the other review sites.

One of my biggest concerns is the fact that, at least in my area, relatively few people are posting reviews directly on Google. There's way more reviews on Yelp and InsiderPages. So while it may be a better design from a usability prospective, I do wonder whether it's a better design in terms of actually being useful to people.

My assumption is citations will remain important for ranking but I guess we'll just need to wait and see.
