Going after my first client Tuesday, and I was just wondering how can I measure the effectiveness of a local website? They obviously wont get hundreds of hits a day (maybe).

Setup a separate phone number for the site so you can track how Manu actual calls are being generated from the website.

How would I do this phone number situation? The thing is, part of local marketing includes google places and other local directories, so a phone number on the site, differing from the directories, will throw customers off. Google Analytics would be good if i was getting a lot of visitors, then i could track many variables. The only thing google analytics would really be good for is keyword rankings, which wont be a big part of local marketing. Unless I'm missing something here?

Keyword rankings can be important for local sites. If you rank well for a keword like yourproduct in yourcity then you could get some good local traffic.

Google analytics would be a good starting point to measuring effectiveness, you could at least see if you are hitting keywords that pertain to your local area. The phone idea does sound a little confusing to me too, the client could just ask callers how they found the business and keep track of it.

Google Analytics tells you a lot more such as where the visitor came from and your bounce rate. ALso check the Google Places dashboard.
