Step 1: Go to Google Keyword Tool (just google it)
Step 2: Click on the Traffic Estimator Tool
Step 3: Put a number in the Max CPC (like $20)
Step 4: enter any keywords you think you want to rank for in the "word or phrase" box
Step 5: Under "Advanced Options", select "Match Types" to be "exact"
Step 6: Click the Estimate button.

    Profit.

This is a great answer to my question. I wasn't asking for advice on how to rank, I was asking opinions as to what would be better, niche, city, state or niche, city.

Using the method above for different niches I found for some you get more searches for city, and others more searches for city, state.

      Thanks again!

Thanks for sharing good information but I am little bit confused about
      Global Monthly searches
      Local Monthly searches
and also for competition I don't understand about competition . is this competition of our own keywords or others .
      Thanks in advance .

Why not try to rank for both? This is just like how marketers take advantage of mis-spellings of high volume keywords.

If I were going to optimize a plumber's site for a specific city, I would first make sure the Google places page is correct and that any other citations online for the business name, phone and address are all matching. Now, Big G knows that the site is local so all I have to do is optimize for "plumber", "plumbing", etc. and with a little work their site should rank in the 7 pack for those keywords. Writing Titles, H1's, and descriptions using "Plumber Fl" is just too cumbersome. Optimize for the reader first and Big G second.

    My small contribution.

I think targeting "plumbing miami fl" will be good. As both "plumbing miami" and "plumbing miami fl" both will be targeted at the same time.

I tried this and am now confused ...by the differences in Estimated Avg CPC and estimated clicks seems like some keywords show less than 1 click even though there are avg search of say 100. So in my mind that means people are searching but not clicking on the ad???

In addition I decided to play with the options a little chose from Advanced options the "Phrase" is being searched significantly more than when you just use "Exact"
so example "plumber miami"-exact might have 100 local searches but when you try "phrase" 'miami plumbers' it is a huge difference.

The most local searches is miami plumbing and miami plumber at 390. This means they are the same for google. This would be your main target.

i think that more people will tend to type in service + city, but one thing you can do is type in variations into google, slowly and see what it suggests below. for most well known one-of-a-kind city names, it seems more people just search city than city, state and you can see this by typing plumber mi.......

    below you see:
    plumber miami
    plumber miami fl
    plumber miami beach
    plumber miami florida

so i would focus on plumber miami first and sprinkle in some plumber miami fl as a secondary. some folks would prescribe this method though:
go after plumber miami florida, and because plumber miami is in your anchor text and backlinking you will start ranking for plumber miami too, but since we can infer that plumber miami fl is lower comp, you can rank for it easier/quicker and begin getting traffic and once satisfied with the ranking on that keyword, go after the primary, plumber miami

Keyword Ranking: Learn to Get Better Rankings for Your Top Keywords
Keyword ranking--where your site is ranked in search engines for a keyword--has a major impact on your Web traffic, lead generation and conversions. Research shows that almost half of all search engine users click on a result on the first page, and the higher you rank on that SERP, the better off you are.

Why don't you use Google ad-word Keyword tool for checking the competition of the keywords.

I too use Google adwords keyword tool, gives you the best statistics. If the keyword doesn't have competition, I'll write about it right away, if it is in one of my niches.

    plumbing miami is better:

Basically this means plumbing miami gets 325 daily searches and the number rank would get 137 clicks PBR means the percentage of people that type in that keyword the higher the PBR the more accurate this data becomes.

from my experience, when you use broad, that will include things like "most trusted miami plumber" which someone else could be optimized for and you will not likely receive traffic for. just an example. but i am number one for a keyword that shows 4,200 exact searches a month and i only average about 50 a day from it, maybe 60. i pick up a few broad matches, but it definitely doesnt add up to over 4,000. and that was the exact. the broad is probably a couple/few thousand above that. samurai takes into account first place rankings and the seot column represents the 42% or so percent of the total search volume. this is my understanding anyhow.

      Hi P1

I have also suggested the same keyword above.
Please can you tell, which tool you have used above. It looks fine with more options and accuracy.
