Quick SMS question

So I'm looking as SMS solutions and some have limits on the amount of texts that can be sent within a given time frame.

From what I've read, instead of using true text messaging protocol (SMPP), these companies are most likely using SMTP.

My question is how do you know if a provider is using SMTP or SMPP??

    A valid question.

    You can guess (sometimes unlimited texts MAY point to SMTP) but I just ask them.

    I also researched the companies and found their comments, reviews, etc and determined if they were telling the truth.

    I settled on the ones I use and happy with them

      Kevin, that doesn't necessarily mean that they are using SMTP because of restriction. The platform I use sends SMPP and the can send 600 per second and Twilio (on a shortcode) sends 30 per second so you can see they both use SMPP but there is a big discrepancy. What I have found is that companies that are limited to a low hourly message allotment are typically using a longcode to send the messages. (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) Some companies use a hybrid by collecting the optin with shortcode SMPP and send the messages SMTP because of the low or no cost involved in doing so. I recommend doing the research to make sure you are getting what you are looking for.

    I think asking is the best option. Most SMS companies will give you a straight forward answer. If they don't, be wary of going with them.

    If you are new to SMS, I recommend checking out fellow Warrior BrashImpact's platform that he just launched. (Mobile Fusion Texting) He let log in to his backend and showed me around and it was very simple, yet feature rich. I'm sure he would be glad to give you a demo if you want. For full disclosure, I am NOT an affiliate and don't make any money off this recommendation, I just think it's a pretty slick system.

      Yeah Mobile Fusion Texting looks good but I was particularly interested in Yeez.

      The list segmentation they offer is great but I wonder if long codes use true SMS and the research I've done hasn't provided a clear answer.

    I would worry more on their fees than SMTP or SMPP,..as most SMS providers charge crazy fees,..at the end of the day they all need to abide by the law,..option to opt out and must use an opt in list,..just my two cents,...

    I'd recommend Twilio if you're US based.

    They can handle large numbers and it's 0.01 cents a message..

    You should call the company and ask them directly as to how their text messages are sent, SMPP or SMTP.

    If they cannot answer this question immediately, you will know 2 things...

    - they probably use SMTP which is NOT supported by carriers
    - they have no idea, and you're best not taking your business to a provider that doesn't have this basic understanding of SMS
