Local Seo and Protecting your work

I got my second client for local seo and I remeber a while back I came across some information that said its best to set up a redirect page to the main site and build links to the redirect page, that way if the customer cancels you just redirect your 1st page to where ever you want and your work stays with you and the customer keeps his website? can anyone confirm?

Backlinks,Articles,(Seo)---->Send them all to Redirect page----->Redirect Page>Customers Main site

The way to do it is to charge up front for your work to get them on page one. If they cancel then it's tuff as they have already paid you for the work you have done.

If you want to keep it all in your control then build a site in their niche, get it on page one and rent it to them, if they stop paying rent it to some one else.

I don't think that is a very good or honest way to do business. They are paying you to do work. You do the work. If they decide to stop paying you, they should get to keep the work they paid you to complete.

Now if you are going to do this redirect stuff, you should make it very clear in the contract that they sign that your work is temporary and is based entirely on them continuing to pay you.

Alternatively you can do the lease space on a website you own option like mentioned above. I think that is a better option than the redirects. At least it is clear and in the open what you are offering and what the client is getting.

If they do decide to cancel your service, there is nothing stopping you from going to their top competitor.

Good advice - we need to keep it honest and ethical and always over deliver. If a clients not happy with something you have done to them.
Most likely they will take it personal and tell others...

Right, you should be paid for the work you do. There is usually a bit floating around where maybe you get a % up front and some more along the way until it is done. If They've paid even half and decide to stop paying, you can stop working but you shouldn't try to go back and take away what you've already done and they've probably already paid for.

I was never a fan of the "you only pay when you get on page one" type of agreement. I know some people love it and it might make for an easier sale but you could put months worth of work in without getting paid then someone else comes along and they drop you since they decide you haven't performed yet.

1.) If you have a contract, it shouldn't be an issue.

2.) It is always good to charge a first month setup fee, and then a month maintenance fee afterwards. That way your first month really covers you, if they want to stop, so be it!

3.) If you build your own private blog/site network, hosted by you and you build authority to those pages and link out to your clients through your own websites, you can change those at any time. I wouldn't use it to hold your clients hostage... well maybe I would... I guess it depends on how you feel about it, but that is the best way to go in my opinion.

You could use the site you are building to generate leads for the businesses instead of a branding site. Get paid per lead or figure out some fair way that both parties agree to. If they don't like the solution, then sign a longer term contract for you services (or you can always do a combination of a contract plus per lead charge). There are many ways to do it.

Even Internet pros sometimes forget about the benefits that can be gained from utilizing local SEO techniques.Basically what I want to do is protect all the work that I am doing for them building thousands of links.

Remind me to never hire you.

They are paying YOU to build backlinks for THEM. You are getting PAID for all the work that you do in building the backlinks. They are not paying YOU to build backlinks for YOURSELF that you can just take with you when you leave so you can charge someone else for them.

I don't know where you got the idea that that's how it works, but that's now how it works. If you want to do something like that, then build a site, get it ranking and sell advertising space on it. When they stop paying for the ads, take the ads done.

This depends highly on how the agreement is in place. I am working with a client where I do his link building on a monthly basis to get and keep top rankings. But I don't want him to suddenly cancel on me once we are in these positions. I personally price my services lower with the expectation of a longer term relationship. I let my clients know this ahead of time and they agree, but you still want that protection as the OP mentioned.

Maybe it is somehow nice but not at all times applicable.
