Online Math Tuition Marketing?

Hey Fellow Warriors

I was going to post this in the main internet marketing forum... But then I thought you guys over here are so much more helpful!

Any way...

A friend of mine is starting an online math tuition service, and he has asked me to help him market it. (for a hefty fee of course)

Right now we are doing a logo design competition, where people in high school can win $1000 if they submit their logo ideas. This is just to build some awareness.

We are going to be putting a lot of flyers up at schools and do some facebook ads.

Ways I have suggested marketing it:

-2 months free tuition trial (want to make it as long as possible so that if they start actually using it, after 2 months have passed they would feel that they need it)

-Facebook ads

-Referral program (people get $$$ for refering friends)

-Going to schools and offering the 2 months free trial

I am planning on doing it like a video sales letter, then they opt in for the 2 months, get a temporary username and password and then have to pay after the 2 months.

But maybe a $1 trial with automatic billing may be better. We have to remember we need to target parents as well (they are the ones paying)

Any one else got ideas?

    Why so long? 2 months free will just attract people who have no intention of paying but want free training.

    The trial period should be long enough to assess quality but not long enough to see full benefit of it so that its only of interest to serious buyers.

    The goal is not to get people to take a trial with you. The goal is to get the most possible sales and a healthy trial to sale conversion ratio so your time is not being wasted.

      The reason I was initially thinking a 2 month trial is because if they have only been using for 7 days, it would be very easy for them to go meh.

      But if they had been using it for 2 months, had seen an improvement in their marks, they would then want to keep paying for it. I want people to actually become users during the trial period.

        It seems that you only have 9 months in the year to get most students. You might do well starting this way but a few other options would be to cut back the trial time after your launch or provide a member level without all the features available. Or better yet, combine those together. Offer 2 weeks unrestricted, 4 weeks with restricted access then make it to where they have to pay.

        It also might be smart to add a option for a entire school to be able to sign up for a year for one large payment. Like a $5 a head if they have over 500 people. Just some quick thoughts here anyways.

          I have a relative in the educational training/class business and my advice, honestly, is to lean towards an app vs an online service. Most of the kids have phones they don't all have the dedicated computers/internet access at home (i.e. share computer, family computer, etc).

          We have as many computers as we have people in our house and still the kids do that work on their phones.

          I'll add to what Barbara wrote.

          You need to differentiate yourselves. "Anyone who needs help with math" isn't a target market.

          Who exactly are you offering help to? How are you offering that help? What makes you different?

          Are you catering to those needing just to pass, or also those wanting to really shine?

          If you don't already have one, you should work on a marketing plan which includes your branding, positioning, competitive advantages and more.

          Right now you're talking more about tactics. Think about your marketing strategies first.
