Local Directory List SEO Questions

I'm creating my first local directory site, and will be using WP, not sure on the theme. But as far as SEO, is concerned is it best to have articles targeting my keywords, as well as having the site optimized with backlinks, etc?

My other question is that I'm targeting a specific niche for a state, and intend to sell each county as an ad spot, on the site. When the user finds their county it will bring them to another page with contact info and brief description, maybe google places about the company. My question is should link for the county be the actual county or the name of the business. For example nichecounty.com/joesmithplumbing or nichecounty.com/centralcounty. Thanks Roc

Yes, have optimized articles and have good backlinks.
Second, go with Nichecounty.com/centralcounty. This way if the person stops paying, you just take them off, but don't loose all the work you put into that page.

Have a general description targeting that niche county.
Then the info for the business. So, you never have to change the page or description.... Just the businesses info.

I never thought of this. This is actually a good idea. I also think as local-specific of keywords is very important.

    Hey rocky,

These days, articles are probably better for getting traffic than they are for giving any SEO authority to your page unless you are targeting super uncompetitive keywords. Here are two things to consider with articles. 1) Are the people you want coming to your site already looking at these article directories OR 2) Did the directory you are submitting to survive the latest Google updates? meaning, do articles still rank highly for long tail keywords easily?

As for structuring the URLs, like vndnbrgj pointed out - it depends on whether or not you are going to be changing out the businesses on the page. If you are, you won't want to use their names as URLs. (If you give some more details I may be able to give a better answer here...)

And lastly, here's a link to a review that I wrote comparing some different local directory themes for WP that you might find helpful: Local Directory Theme Comparison
