How do you guys make Postcards?

Design-wise. Can I use photoshop or any other adobe program. Which would be best to make my own design. I've got some offline samples I grabbed from some local businesses, to give me an idea of where I want to go with it. But I'm now looking forward to designing this and need to know measurements, what format I should save in, and which would be best to design them in, Thanks very much.

  • I design all my postcards with PrintShop using the postcard template and then I save the image as a jpeg image and upload it at GotPrint.com to get my postcards printed and mailed to me.

    I hope this helps,

    • We use two other programs besides PS and upload it to gotprint just like Martin and a host of others on this forum. BTW, if the client has an existing postcard design they want to use, your job is 97% complete.

      Good luck.

  • 300-360DPI a psd converted to TIFF or JPG is fine.

Ask the printer for a dimension template to use.

  • You're definitely going to need to include 'bleed' as well, because of all of these big online printers require it. If you download the templates they give you then you'll have it all set up for the right dimensions.

Bleed is basically an extra 1/8th inch (.125") added to the size of the postcard so that the machine can trim that extra amount off and the color will go to the very edge of the paper.
  • Photoshop for me. Be sure to set image to 300dpi, CYMK color. And many printers offer free templates online with the bleed and safe areas marked.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
