Pretty sure somebody started another thread about this a few days ago, I immediately went out and started a group, the advice was then to add 100 contacts to your group each day from groups that you had joined previously.

I agree with Eric. I just started one last week and have 290 members (with the help of Eric and about 4 or 5 other WSOs). I have received 5 leads (2 fell thru and I am in talks with 3) and 2 JV ops (although one was trying to reel me into his business "opportunity" aka MLM)

I love how MLM "marketers" market. SMH

I am offering an accountant 5 leads I gathered for him doing a survey. He needs a new website/SEO and hope they pass along my information to his connections.

I see a gold mine. I was sick of hearing of all the success stories so I went out and learned how to do everything. I like what I see so far.

I believe when you say brand, you are actually referring to connection, right?

Above is a false statement. To build your brand on LinkedIn you need to build a group and a company page. Connections don't matter with branding!

Great post! Linkedin, like any other form of networking/advertising/communicating with others is a great way to find new leads/customers. The one common theme with success stories throughout this entire forum is ACTION! Nothing works if you just read about it.

the question with all groups is how to ensure theyre full of genuine specific group industry people and not a load of marketers broadcasting every few days , for that I choose the option that they have to be approved to join, so I keep out the riff raff, the real industry people respect and appreciate that, theres no spamming only quality helpful discussions .

You go to many of these generic groups, look at the members and 50% of them (at least) will be marketers with 80% of the posts attempted (failed) self promotion, very few genuine industry specific pain point discussions started, the groups we are setting up steer clear of this, yes it may be harder to grow them , but quality over quantity any day, 95% industry specific members and a few true experts in marketing /supplies etc.

Did you guys know that when someone joins your LinkedIn group, you can instantly send out an autoresponder directly to their email just like you would if they signed up for your email list! The best part is, you know their LinkedIn email is an active email address of theirs since they need to confirm their email with LinkedIn!

Decide on a target audience that you want to build a group for and name it something that would intrigue that audience to join.

For example, if you are targeting restaurant owners...you can name you group something like "Ideas for Successful Restaurant Owners". Make sense?

The best/fastest way is to invite people to the group by sending them an invitation to join. Send these invitations to LinkedIn members of other groups that you are targeting

I didn't knew that you could do that. Will this not become a big SPAM-Party? I fear that Warriors will flood LI with a gazillion new groups and that direct inviting will only last so long (like FB restricts adding people that you don't know). I think that LI wants to keep High quality connections, real connections between people.

Linkedin has been GREAT for me. I have almost 1000 targeted contacts
and just went over 430 members to my linkedin group

Every new contact I make I send a 'nice to connect with you' message
that ends with my website and some info. Then I send an invite to join my
group.

Joining other groups and participating works well too... I notice my profile
gets viewed a lot more when I do it. It's not hard to become an expert, if
you do it right and with finesse.

Just wanted to update everyone...

A couple days ago I reached 20,000 group members for one of my groups inside of LinkedIn. Well, I just checked today and it's still at 20,000!

I knew something had to be up so I checked the LinkedIN FAQs and found out this "How many members can be in a given group? 20,000 (maximum default)."

But, I knew that other groups on LinkedIn had more than 20,000 members so I sent them a support ticket. They responded saying that this is setup by default and all you have to do is message them once you are around 20,000 members and they will increase the limit.

So, hopefully when you guys start coming close to that 20,000 mark you now know you have to message them here - Contact Us | LinkedIn Help Center to increase the limit.

Running a group is a very different mission and goal vs. generating leads and making sales. I've done quite well over the past several years simply engaging directly with people in groups that I interact.

I think the difference lies in the mentality of wanting to just sit back and cast a wide net, hoping that somoene will respond. Versus, making an effort to proactively engage with a qualified, targeted prospect on a 1:1 basis. Of course, on the outside looking in, this could appear to be more work than not to some - which could affect motives.

I think the difference lies in the mentality of wanting to just sit back and cast a wide net, hoping that somoene will respond. Versus, making an effort to proactively engage with a qualified, targeted prospect on a 1:1 basis. Of course, on the outside looking in, this could appear to be more work than not to some - which could affect motives.

When you run a group you become the "go to expert" in your group...

Not necessarily. Allen Says isn't the "go to expert" in internet marketing. He just runs the group.

They're two, very different missions with very different intentions.

You're thinking as a competitor...not as someone who is trying to learn from what you have to offer.

Of course if you don't know what you're talking about, any educated person will see through that BS. But, if you create a group on a topic that you have knowledge in...anyone who is "learning" will come to you as their trusted expert if you gain their trust with quality information.

No, I am not thinking about the competitive factor at all. There's a sheer reality that Allen Says doesn't enter into the equasion as an "internet marketing go-to-guy" even though he runs one of the bigger forums. I think the real BS factor is when someone starts a group with the obvious intent to position themselves as the "go to guy". I've started and run some very, very large communities - and that's what they are. Communities. A healthy community isn't a town that's run by the mayor sheriff who positions himself as the "go to guy" vs. being the facilitator helping others connect with other "go to folks". These are very different callings and strategies - and someone doesn't have to start a community to leverage the existing opportunities in well-established communities. If your goal is to make money as a "go to guy", then make money as that person, but don't confuse the two. Of course, if your real mission is to sell some product based on convincing people to start a community so they're the go to person, you did cover things like... supply and demand, wherein yet another social media or entrepreneurship/founder group isn't going to have a big audience because there's well-entrenched players. Additionally, an underwater basket weaving group might find a tough road with the audience there. Just saying... traditional marketing principles still actually do apply on the web.

We have just recently started to utilize LinkedIn and its beginning to take hod. We make contacts and participate in discussions that we have knowledge of. This all in the hopes of being able to make offers from a 'friendly' familiar name. I think LI is a very underused avenue for marketing B2B and your services.

I think this is a very good idea! I often search for potential clients on LinkedIn, and I browse through my web design nice groups to do it. A lot of the groups on there have a lot of spammy posts, but there are some DEFINITE leads there.
