Facebook for local bike store

I know there are a million different posts about facebook pages, but I still have a question.

One of my clients owns a small high end bike shop in a working class town of about 30,000. Aside from using facebook ads, how would you go about picking up likes?

It's been a while since I have done any facebook management stuff and it seems like facebook's latest round of changes to business pages was specifically designed to make it difficult to build a following. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I would say having a Facebook page is essential for any business trying to sustain and grow their audience. I built a page for my travel project, LearnSponge, mainly because I know my target audience (friends, family, travelers, etc.) spends time on Facebook! I think I'm now at over 100 followers and I get a fair amount of interaction on my page from people...often times strangers. It's pretty cool.

To answer your question: Offer an in-shop special to anyone that like's the page via their mobile device. Verify name and offer a discount for exchange.

I'd suggest a card to drop in their bag upon checkout.

Are the owners on FB themselves? I'd start by asking friends and family to like my page and I believe FB still makes it easy for you to msg people to do this. Does the store have employees with friends and family on FB? They may not all be local, but you can get a good number of likes from friends and family alone.

Of course, promote the page to existing and new customers - but like anything else - you need to be posting things of interest to your target market to get them to your page, to like it and to keep them around.

Personally, while I think a fan page can be nice to have, I'd much rather have an email or sms list that I own and control and can contact with news or special offers on a regular basis. With FB or anyone else, you're at their mercy when using their system for free. Just look at how they're now showing posts to less and less of your friends or fans and how they've recently changed to start charging you to promote your posts.

Biking is a pretty exciting sport... and a great opportunity to use crazy pictures of bikers doing their sport.

Facebook is a place where people go for entertainment so I think these pictures should sit really well with them.

Use pictures that are UNUSUAL, SHOCKING or ABSURD. These are the pictures that get shared by people.... And I guess it's pretty safe to assume that your Fan's friends are people living in the same town or nearby places too - which are people your client wants to target.

    Hope that helps.

With my business I have grown my facebook the most by offering weekly deals and initial deals.

With the initial deal we gave them a 20% coupon as soon as they liked the page.
With our weekly deals we take each comment, post, like, share, etc and we offer another 20% coupon. Each action get's them a "ticket" in the pot.
