Hi All,

If I don't have any past experience (clients) in offline consulting and I want to start offering offline consulting services, what's the best way to approach potential clients for the very first time? If this question has been addresses please point me in the right direction otherwise I appreciate any advice.

Thank You,

Ed

I have no experience at all, but I do know the basics of internet marketing just from being on this forum and around on the internet.

know that the knowledge you do have is more than they have so you can help them in their business. If you do that, they'll sign up with you. Attitude matters.

Ask yourself - in which field you are the best?

And Now start that as your Business! No body can help you in this matter as you don't have any experience in any fields.

Why not start a business of some sort so you can apply what you've learned to your business.

As you develop your experience paying with your money - you'll be in a better position to offer advice to others. You'll also have proof for the advice you give.

I would be leery of paying money to a consultant that had no business experience. I find many sales reps that call me often have a similar background. I usually end the conversation fast.

The other thing that is common is consultants that have tons of experience working with Fortune 500 companies but then decide the want to help a small business.
Their advice is often off the mark. What works when you have a million to spend in marketing and what works when you have $10,000 can be very different.

At the million mark you can go for brand and media blitz. At the $10,000 you need to know what works today.

Try giving something away for free to build trust, then go with seeing if they'd want to pay for it. That's usually a good way to get someone's attention, is doing free work.

Any suggestions on what I can give away for free without costing me a lot of money and time?

@EJM Welcome to the lucrative and often times painful, frustrating, and rewarding world of offline marketing.

My recommendation to you is to give something away for free to a couple of local businesses in your neighborhood. In my business I create mobile websites. There are plenty of fiverr gigs that will work to get you started so for $5 can you have them build a mobile website. They're not the best but they work. You may also want to check out Odesk and find a good web designer you can partner up with that will build them for you. The good thing about Odesk is that they don't bill you right away so you can charge for the website have them get started on building the mobile website for you and not have to worry about paying them right away. I pay about $40 for each mobile website installation and I don't think you will have any problem finding someone to build them for you at that price either.

You may want to consider learning how to install a wordpress site and getting a good mobile wordpress site them that's easy to install and put together.

It's good to have at least a few projects in your portfolio and often times when you do good free work it leads into paid work or referrals (but remember you have to ask for them)

My other recommendation for you is to get good at cold calling and don't be afraid to hop on the phones. There is no better way in my opinion to make quick cash than to pick up the phone and start dialing.

If you really want to supercharge your dialing I would purchase a tool called Localizer that scrapes phone numbers and businesses to call in whatever niche and location you're trying to hit. This will make it effortless to dial out 300-400 calls per day. Dialing manually it's hard to even break 100 (trust me)

Don't sell the product over the phone simply sell the appointment. When you're at your appointment remember to be a consultant and not a sales person.

    Good luck!
