Working on a clients website right now. Wants to make a mockup/dummy website first while keeping the old website live. Then switch it over once all revisions have been made.

What do you guys suggest the easiest route is?

Working with Wordpress.

Thanks

In the past, I had a few .info sites that were my business name, so many times I would use those. Currently I either use a subdomain or a local install of WP.

So I could simply create a folder within the current hosting account with wordrpess and set the website up. Then to view the website It would be www.website.com/wordpress?

Then once the new website is complete, delete the old website files and extract the contents of the 'wordpress' folder to public html?

As long as you can utilize a second database within the hosting, then yes. If you can not utilize a second database, an option is to install the "NEW" wordpress into a subfolder and then use the same database but add a prefix to the new database tables like nwp_

When you delete the old files, extract the new contents to the public html, then you need to do a minor tweak of the database to change the URL structure so that it matches the www .w domainname .com to www . domainname . com/wordpress

And as stated above, it is best to block search engine, spider and any other access to the mockup site so it does not mess up the indexing.

Last but not least, if the old site is NOT a wordpress site, make sure that you set up the NEW pages with the same URL structure so that they do not lose their indexing, page rank or search engine ranking. If the site is a .asp, .php or .html, then there are plugins that will allow you to add those extensions to the end of pages/posts url slugs in wordpress.

And remember to keep the access blocked so that the content and URLs don't get indexed.
