Direct mail - Lumpy vs. Social/Invitation Envelopes

For those with experience with direct mail, have many people had success with the social/invitation style envelopes? Or is lumpy just hands down going to be a much better option?

The reason being is because of budget issues, but if it means the difference between success & failure, then I guess I would have to go smaller with a lumpy campaign.

Any advise would be appreciated.

What do you think has the greatest potential for the short term, given your budget?

Didn't you answer your own question by deciding on a small lumpy mail campaign?

Just make sure to do FOLLOW UP CALLS. Do that week-after-week and you're [probably] going to see positive results.

Might post your letter(s) in the copywriting forum for feedback before spending $$$$

What are you selling? And also ask yourself the question, how much direct mail do you actually open? Conversely, have you ever NOT opened something that feels like it could have something good inside it?

Lumpy mail is a great concept. The only potential pitfall is leaving people feeling shortchanged with what's inside. So make it interesting, make it creative, it doesn't stop at putting a bump in the envelope.

I'm definitely going to do follow-up calls. My question is really have people had good success with the social/invitation envelopes.

Also, I don't know about the potential since I have never done a lumpy or social/invitation envelopes. I done regular envelopes before.

Thanks for the suggestion about the copywriting forum.

I'm selling reputation management to clients with bad reviews. I open everything that is handwritten. I chuck out all post cards and other glossy stuff unless I see an offer, which 99% doesn't have.

Yes, so my offer inside is a great offer in my opinion. I've actually run it by a few local business owners who think it's a great offer as well.

A bigger determinant will be the list you mail to and the number of letters you send. Handwriting is very important to getting your letter opened. Whether adding something lumpy to that help is TBD. I don't suppose it would hurt. It's kind of gimmicky IMO, but others have reported good results, so, worth a try. Just do. There's no guarantee of success as many other variables come into play. Good luck.

I love love love 3D mail!!!

I send out self-mailers (trash cans, bottles, and bank bags). Who's not going to open it?

For the trash cans and bank bags I put in a sales letter and the bottles I put in a handwritten message. Works wonders!!
