Do telemarketers prefer hourly pay or commission?

I'm about to hire a telemarketer for the first time. I was a telemarketer myself, but I'm targeting the US market and my english is not good enough to do it myself. I have been looking around on odesk and elancer. I noticed there are two payment options: hourly and fixed.

I was planning on paying a $300 commission on a $999 sale. But this doesn't even seem to be an option, or did i miss something?

Is 'commission only' not the right way to find a good telemarketer? Do you have any other tips on how to find a 'good' telemarketer?

No way, grab a call center in Manila, pay them by the closed deal ... send the calls directly to them, and record all the calls. If they screw up, grab the recorded call and make a fuss, they will get their act together really quickly!

You'll have an extremely difficult time paying a telemarketer by commission only. By paying them only on sales closed, you'll need to find some very good callers who can close (which is nearly impossible, especially on a freelance site) or you'll expecting them to essentially work for free and hope that you can close the deals.

You need to simply pay them hourly and maybe give them bonuses for leads set. They shouldn't even really get a commission for sales.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Just to clarify: The telemarketer won't be getting leads. He'll receive my leads and has to close the deal by phone.

The crappy ones will demand an hourly wage... and extremely good ones have no problem with commission because it's the best way for them to make more money... think about it... $10-15/hr +5% commission on a 4-5 figure sale or a 30-40% commission only? Commission beats it out every time...well usually.

The problem is, you also get really crappy ones that accept commission only because they're desperate.

I should also mention that if you're wanting your telemarketers to sell... because you can't.... then you're headed for trouble. Commission only telemarketers or sales in general need to be sold on the business, or you.... or both.

Good point. The thing is, I know how to sell. I have sold this service before in other languages, so I know it's good. And I have experience as a telemarketer myself. The only reason why I am hiring someone else is because English is not my first language. I will have no problem communicating in English about myself and my service to a potential telemarketer. But selling in an other language is something I don't feel comfortable doing. And my accent might put of potential clients.
