I agree with the others - I'm not so sure that posting to search engines is necessary.

I prefer to submit to online directories. Search engines will find me, but directories will not.

I hear what you are saying about submitting new websites to the search engines. But only when they are new. Afterwards, a marketer should focus on adding content and building quality links through article marketing, social networking, and so on.

Regarding pinging, when I was promoting my older, static html website more actively, I used to ping each new post I made and I agree that's a good idea.

However, on my newer Wordpress site, it has the pinging process built into it, so I don't have to worry about pinging.

Thanks for that. Can you cite an example of a good online directory? Preferably one that you are currently using.

I think it's necessary to submit to the major search engines when your website is new, then you concentrate on posting content to your site. But the articles should be well optimized, not just writing for the sake of having articles posted on your site.

My personal experience is that there are many articles I wrote in the beginning, which are hardly seen. I think it's because they were not well optimized since I hadn't yet known anything about search engine optimisation. This implies that your content should be optimized for search engines to locate it and rank it high.

Much of the advise in this thread is vastly out of date since this thread was started. Some of the information will actually harm your placement in the SERPs if you are using WordPress. I know Jeff and GT knew better, but were trying to be polite.

emco717, I'm sorry, but you are giving advise dated 09-12-2011 that was out of date at the time 06-17-10, and is still out of date with WordPress today. I invite you to read this thread for the details:

WordPress automatically pings Ping-O-Matic which in turn automatically pings the prime notification services in your list. You are advising people to manually submit to Ping-O-Matic. The end result is Ping-O-Matic is receiving the notifications twice from the same domain and that is not allowed or advised by Ping-O-Matic. As I said, visit the link above for the details.

XML Site Map (XMLSM). The XMLS is more important to the SERPS than any ping service! Ping-O-Matic, WordPress and the Search Engines: Google, Ask, Yahoo are on record that the site map is and always will be the defacto standard for submissions.

The short of this is... PIPS with WordPress automatically submits to Ping-O-Matic and if you have the XML Site Map installed it will automatically submit to the major search engines.

I agree. Ultimalely, content that brings visitors it the answer.

The search engine page at kawgo.com has links to 50 alternative search engines.

Visit the search engines and manually submit your site when possible.
