Looking for a new eCommerce developer

There are a number of good reasons for going with a custom solution, though unless you are a good developer the up front cost will be a bit high.

1. Exactly matching your business processes.
Done right, a custom e-commerce platform can exactly match your business processes, integrate nicely (or serve as) your customer response management system, and generally make everything flow nicely.

2. Speed and Flow
A custom system can be made to be much faster than pretty much anything in the marketplace currently and can have exactly the front end (buyer) and back end (processing) flows that you want.

Obviously, there are some down sides as well ... if the developer or group that builds the platform decides to leave, dies, or decides to start charging you more and more for the product you are going to have troubles.

I've built a custom e-commerce site for a client and they were extremely happy with it. It was very fast (1 css file, 1 js file, the html page, and graphics), matched the clients business logic exactly, and gave him some extras that you don't commonly see with an e-commerce site (such as the ability to view carts in progress, see abandoned carts, etc.).

The only time he has needed more work on the system was to add new features on rare occasion. The site paid for itself in increased traffic and sales within the first 2 months of being launched ... so in his case it worked out nicely. That being said, many places (especially groups/agencies) just offer such to milk people ... and often just take an existing cart and try to hack it to make it work.

If you go with a custom solution, be very careful or you will lose your shirt.
