Malware On All My Sites - How To Get Rid Of It?

I am feeling really overwhelmed right now. I have an iframe virus thing on a my sites and I have over 50 sites currently. The iframe foxtris.com or something.

I was wondering what would be the best way to tackle this issue and how to make sure I get it off every site without messing the sites up?

Hostgator told me they got rid of it for me but they didn't as I checked and its on every site.

I ave scanned my computer for viruses and deleted everything and am in process of changing passwords but not sure how to make my life easier in getting rid of it.

  • Just an idea:
    If these are blogs, export a copy of one to your local computer & scan for viruses. If it's clean, delete the existing blog files on the server, and then rebuild. If that works, lather, rinse, repeat. Yes, it's going to be a pain in the butt, but what other choices do you have?

    If the sites are traditional HTML, you should already have complete copies of them on your computer. Delete & upload again.

    • Yeah I guess you are right - that would probably be easiest. They are wordpress mostly. What sucks is that I can't do that right now as waiting for a new lead for my laptop which is where all my stuff is. I got this virus while working on a borrowed computer!

    Thomas Raef helped me immensely last Oct. with the same issue. A number of my sites were infected and he cleared them all in short order. His web site is wewatchyourwebsite.com and his email is traef@wewatchyourwebsite.com.

  • I just had some malware on one of my sites and I checked the .htaccess file and there it was. I just deleted the code, one line, and it was gone! Perhaps yours will be that easy!

    • Scan all your code for iframes and the url they point to. Check your .htaccess as SteveCThomas mentioned. These are how they get in.

      And above all, you need to change all your passwords to something complex and not found in a dictionary, and update every piece of software on your site. It's likely they got in through an old version of software such as blogging software or forums, etc.

      ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS update your software. Anytime Wordpress or any other software tells you to update, 99% of the time it's because a security flaw was discovered, and there are programs that will crawl the net looking for sites who have the flaw. Most of the time hackers find your site through google and they never actually log on to it manually, a script does it for them.

      Be careful and watch everything closely, there is a lot of money in this type of hacking so a lot of people are doing it.
