Display Popular Categories In WP?

PROGRAMMING

I need to display popular categories on my blog in a list.

I can't find any info on this anywhere.

Essentially it needs to also have a limit fucntion so I can limit the amount of categories shown to a certain number.

Any ideas?

Popular based on what? The number of posts in the category, the number of comments, visitors or something else?

Is this any good to what you are after?

Anyone else got any ideas.

For either popular tags or popular posts.

Preferably without using a plugin.

You may reorganize categories on your blog to display only chosen by you. I have written a blog post about it some time ago (I still can not post links so just go to blog from my footer to category "Blog Maintenance" and click on the first post).
