Need a few beta testers for a server monitoring product

Hello all! Apologies if this post is inappropriate or placed incorrectly. I intend to open a classified ad when I launch, but I just need some testing in the meantime.

I'm getting ready to release a product that monitors websites/servers and then lets the user know (by SMS or by email) if it goes down/comes back up. I'd like to get no more than 10 folks from these parts to help me test it, provide some feedback, etc.

If you're interested, please shoot me a PM (I know you'll need 50 posts, and I actually prefer it -- no offense to the other newbies like me, but I'd rather have proven entities, anyway, since it's costing me money to give it away).

For a bit of background, I developed this product because I could have been burned when one of my servers went down the other day. I only knew it because I happened to check a website running on that server and it obviously didn't work....

I also had my CPV adds running through a prosper202 install on this server, meaning I'd have been SOL when those ads tried to display. The same would be true for anyone running WordPress installs, CPC ads, ecommerce sites, you name it.

I figure that anyone who runs websites and depends on them being available (particularly when it would be a straight loss in the case of ads that don't work) would benefit from this service. I hope you'll agree!

Please let me know (again, by PM) if you're interested and I'll shoot you an access code and the address.

Thanks a million!

- John

What ports/services does your uptime monitor check when it runs exactly? If it's just port 80 then there's a ton of free versions out there already and it will be hard to compete with them (i.e. we use UptimeRobot and Pingdom for every server on our rack, both of which cost nothing for the basic service).

There I go trying to innovate the wheel.

I'd honestly not found those -- thanks for pointing them out.

Currently the service only checks connectivity to port 80. I have a generic ping method that also works (but isn't implemented for other reasons), and I can add the option to check any port, I suppose, with the standard connection opening.

What else along these lines would make you happy?

      Thanks for the input!

Well the feature that sold me on Pingdom was their multiple geographic testing points, see the screenshot below:

This is from one of the monitors we have setup with them, you can see they have a lot of boxes in the US, but also in Germany, London, and the Netherlands which is really neat.

Very nice! I'd already planned to have 3 different locations around the US pinging (to begin with). I can also add a London box at the least if things go well.

I do also allow up to 10 websites per user for $15/month (volume pricing can always be discussed). Would being able to hit a few different ports (perhaps in a rotation to save processing time) per website add value, or just confuse things?

Thanks a million for your feedback!

Is it just a simple PHP script that does the monitoring for your service? If so, I might be willing to let you run one of your test points off our rack (located in Phoenix, Arizona).

Heck, we might be willing give you free hosting for the service under the right circumstances. Send me an email and I'll get back to you tomorrow: chris@boltwebhosting.com
