Keyword research gone wrong?

Hi. I used a website called SeoProfiler that I have a paid membership to, and did keyword research on a particular set of keywords, and came back with around 33,000 searches per month. I built a small website around this subject and keywords. I only afterward went to Google and I think it was through an Ad Sense account I looked up the monthly traffic and it said 170! So now I'm wondering (1) why the huge difference in traffic counts and (2) did I just waste my time (3 months off and on) creating a website around these keywords?

Lesson learned: Don't rely on any one keyword search tool alone.

Check multiple tools and get some sense of how each one "counts" and tracks numbers. Even Google will give you varying results depending upon the kind of match you're looking for.

Some people on this forum will tell you, after studying the subject extensively, that you can't rely on any tools to give you accurate numbers. The argument is that the higher the numbers, the more apt you are to want to spend money in the market so (they say) it is in the interest of the search engines to skew the numbers much higher than they really are.

Hi Steve. Thank you for your reply. I'll spend time today running the search in other keyword research tools listed on this website. If I find that most of them are tending towards the lower undesirable traffic number then I guess I will seriously think about abandoning the project and moving on to something else (feeling discouraged).
      Thank you.
