Has anyone ever used Article Demon or another program for backlinks?

Hey, I'm new to SEO and am trying to generate traffic to my blog posts. I've heard about Article Demon and a couple other resources for creating backlinks and wanted to get the advice of some of you who have had experience with these. Are they effective? Are they worth the cost? Any feedback would be appreciated .
