Ecommerce category page as landing page

This is kind of both an SEO and CRO question.

I have an ecommerce site with content pages that I will be adding more of. Many of the product category pages also have a few paragraphs of content, and they are among some of the top landing pages.

I am conflicted on whether to add content to the category pages to try to get more search traffic there, or to create new landing pages with the content and put in links to products and categories. The content may be tips on putting together the right package, or explaining the difference between different subcategories of products, or the advantages of the products for sale.

On one hand I'd like them to land on the category page because they're just one click away from all the products, but at some point the category pages might look a little overwhelming with all the content, even if I put the content below the products listing.

What are your thoughts?

Better you add contents to both Category Level Pages and product level too. At Category level there many be different products which comes under one category so select keywords accordingly and for product specific the description and details part is unique.

So you're saying do content on product and category pages instead of content pages?

I'm talking about more the content that applies to a variety of products that can either be on a category page or content page.

Resurrecting my old thread to get a couple more opinions, and give an update.

Right now when there's a keyword I want to rank better for, I'm doing one of these, in order of priority:

    1. Optimize a product page for keyword
    2. Optimize a category page for keyword
    3. Create a new category page optimized for keyword on which I can easily add a few existing products where the selection will be easy to choose from. This is particularly easy to do for "widget sets" and similar groupings that customers have already defined in their heads.
    3. Create a new content page with keywords and lots of content where more explanation and a variety of choices is required. Place photos and links in the content to appropriate products and categories. This requires the most work.

So I only create new content pages when the other options are exhausted or not feasible. Any reason this is a bad idea?
