Will Backlinks Always Be King?

Hi All,

Wanted to get your opinion on this one. We all know that backlinks are a major factor in ranking in the serps. But do you think this will always be the case?

Or how long do you think backlinks will be the number one factor in terms of ranking?

Do you think there is going to be a major shift in the algorithum and backlinks will one day no longer be relevant?

Thanks
#backlinks #king

Backlinks will always be relevant in my eyes, think about it, you press a facebook like (thats a backlink) you leave a PDF online with your name or product name with your more details page (your own website) thats a backlink...

I cannot see this changing anytime soon unliss bitcoin is going to be the new backlinking system (maybe possible?)

Bit more to think about if we had no backlinks, how else would google or other search engines find their way around websites? css class ids? (could be to many duplicates)

Your website domain (as far as i know) is a backlink from it's birth, think about it, once it's passed to your from your registrar it's a backlink right?

Let me know ay nice topic.

Yes, they're probably relevant for a long time. That's Google's way of seeing what's popular and relevant for their user. Their whole engine has been built around it.

That's NOT a backlink, at least not in SEO context. Facebook like is a mark in their database, and Google's spider has no way of reading it.

Over the years the value of backlinks has continued to fall gradually. I believe that one day backlinks will no longer be an important part of the algorithm, but it's not gonna happen dramatically.

Someone should do a case study....

A site with only backlinks and no content.
    And
A site with content and no backlinks.

Then the true king will emerge......
    Base on the rankings.

The crucial factor about backlinking nowdays is that they come from relevant and authority sites. So for example, if you have a site on travel, Google are going to find out that your links are coming from a Sports website - this wont be relevant in their eyes.

Concentrate on related backlinks and your site will do well. Engage users with good content and you will do well.

I think backlinks are something you will always need. I don't know if they will be "king", but I'd say they will always make up 30-40% of your ranking.

It is still the king. But just like in a game of chess, without the queen (great website a.k.a. provides visitors with information that they're looking for)

It also needs great knights (social media signals). e.t.c.

It is important and powerful, but it needs other things as well if you want to see great SEO results entering 2015 and beyond!

Nope, in SEO there are no Kings nor Queens. In my opinion, SEO as a whole consists of different elements combined together to work as one. Every part of it is essential: links, backlinks, content, page loading, etc. Meaning, every thing should be balance.

i think the answer is yes, naturally and theoretically. but the fact isn't always the same. there are plenty of sites that have less backlinks but do have great contents in which attract visitors more than attracting links. they can rank a lot better and show higher in serp than those with tons of backlinks but not so much traffic.

    bounce rate maybe?

I personally think CONTEXT is king. Content without CONTEXT... a dud. Linking anymore has become CONTEXT based... well I think so anyways. I even have my theories about backlinking as a whole that at some point in the future it will be dropped as a primary source of SEO ability.

It's an interesting question. I'm inclined to say they will always be relevant, but then again, who knows what will happen in 5-10-15 years?
For now, I'd say you should definitely focus on getting good quality backlinks! You can't predict what will happen in the far away future, so I'd say it's best to concentrate on what you should do now.

I myself can't see any reason why backlinks would not be relevant when it comes to search engine rankings. They have been relevant for so many years now and nothing has taken the place of that. As long as you mix good content with backlinks and relevant backlinks this will always help to make your website get better results.

Yes, I do believe that backlinks are always the king and will remain king for ever. More or less, they are the support to the website. The base or the frame what ever you say are the backlinks for the website.

Taking a simple example. No doubt today the technology has come up with different innovations but still some of the old gadgets take feature to manage the things. Same way backlinks also will have the essence for ever.

I would have to say when it comes to content publishing, Back links will always be king!
...and... to get the fastest, most stable long-term
rankings for all of your web pages, you need the following:
    1) A large number of incoming links linking to your site (over time).
    2) These links must absolutely be of the highest quality possible

Do any decent websites still use dofollow links? I am always confused on the idea of getting backlinks these days. Proably why I havent thought of creating any in the last few years... maybe I am making a mistake, I don't know.

When it comes to NoFollow, Matt Cutts had this to say:
"How does Google handle nofollowed links?

In general, we don't follow them. This means that Google does not transfer PageRank or anchor text across these links. Essentially, using nofollow causes us to drop the target links from our overall graph of the web. However, the target pages may still appear in our index if other sites link to them without using nofollow, or if the URLs are submitted to Google in a Sitemap. Also, it's important to note that other search engines may handle nofollow in slightly different ways."
If nofollow is being followed these days, the "nofollow" attribute just made the entire web longer for no reason at all.

Yes, Backlink will always the king of website ranking. Because Google read like these backlinks as a vote. If these votes comes from the relevant website or high authority website that will be more beneficial.

User metrics are King. If a user does not have a good experience, Google loses out, because they lose trust in their search engine's ability to gather and give out data in an organized way. This is why Crowd Search Me is the future of SEO because it provides user metrics such as people searching for brand keywords, clicking your website listing, viewing it, and randomly browsing other pages within your website before tweeting or sharing on other social sites.

Yep. To emphasize and hopefully boil this down a bit, Backlinking will exist in a way but algorithms have been homing in on what they refer to as "spammy" backlinks. Possible search results will start to just favor high reputation references over multiple backlinks as a hard rule, this is already happening a bit but I imagine it will get more aggresive. The main things to build long term success regardless of SEO relevance changes is likely:

    - How long do people stay on your site?
    - How many pages do they view?
    - The bounce rate.
    - How many people link to your content from their site?
    - How many people have shared the content on the major social sites like Twitter, Facebook and Google+?

Linking is the only point that's relevant to this topic.

Your visitors surfing habits when they're on your site do not directly have any effect on search visibility. Bounce rate may be an indication of something, but you need to have a decent grasp of the context: what your users are doing, and where are they coming from? For example, if someone coming from search, finding an answer, and leaving satisfied after reading just one page counts as a bounce.

There's no decent proof that social media has any direct effect on SEO. Correlation is not causation, and the correlation can usually be explained. You're reaching out to your followers, and maybe some of them will react and point a link to your direction.
