Best Local SEO Guide As Of April 2015?

I want to teach a small business owner about SEO and instead of writing paragraph after paragraph of content I would rather point them in the right direction with the latest local SEO guide and add my own input as I go.

What is the best local SEO guide, which contains current information (as of April 2015)?

Only free, I am not interested in buying Google Sniper or something.

Write a beginner guide and release it for free, then try to upsell people to your advanced training! :-)

    • I really should. Lots have requested. But I don't have time and 101 is not my focus and does not even interest me. It's needed, it's just not something I would personally do.

I like helping experienced pros get to the next level. There is just so much to local that I don't think anyone could do a course than goes all the way from 101 to advanced, so I focus on the advanced info.

OHHHHH I just thought of a good one for you guys. It's not step by step but it's pretty comprehensive.

Sorry, keep forgetting about that one. Just ran into it again, so wanted to share.

Thanks for sharing the link. What would you say are the 5 most important factors when doing local SEO? Is link building less important for local SEO as you will have less competition?

Check out Local Client Takeover. It's free while they're ironing out the bugs. I spent last week looking at it, and it's definitely worth $5,000.

They bust down ranking in the 7 pack, getting organic YouTube rankings, ranking organic locally, buying traffic, generating leads to your own business, and hacking the processes so you can move forward.

I'm not associated with them, but if they had an affiliate program I'd be pushing it.

I don't understand what Citations are exactly. Is it the name of your business written in the text of another website or is it about the anchor text of the link to your site?

Yes important. But not the MOST important any more by a long shot.

You can have all the citations in the world, but if you have GMB violations or poor LOCAL on-site SEO you still won't rank. Citations alone don't move the needle these days. But yes, it's still important that they are accurate and consistent.

It's any mention of NAP on a web site. (Business Name, Address, Phone.)

Usually they are on a local directory site or industry directory site. But there are structured and unstructured citations and many flavors inbetween.

Normally they include a link, in the case of directories. But citation really refers to mention of NAP whether or not a link is included.

        Does that help?

Yes, so could I create a PBN with the business name, address, phone number but no link and still boost my ranking in Google?

Do you have a list of steps that you would do for a local SEO client, after keyword research is completed?

    Step 1: Title tag
Step 2: Internal linking within content
Step 3: Google Local (Map) listing
Step 4: Backlinks from business directories with citations
Step 5: Create 3 new pages every month to give Google fresh content (blog, fresh articles)
Step 6: 1 PRWeb press release every month

    What else?

GMB stands for Google My Business? What violations? Is it like errors in Webmaster Tools?

Step 7, find local blogs, build a local blog network
Step 8, sell AdWords management, setup campaign if possible.

So what is the most important ranking factor? Still backlinks?

There isn't really a single most important. These days I don't think there is any ONE thing that really moves the needle.

Here are the top things in general, but a bunch of steps and issues inside each one.

      1) Google+ Local listing data quality and optimization. (Bunch of different things you need to do right, bunch of things that can get you in trouble. But all depends on industry, type of listing etc.)

      2) On-site Local SEO with all the right "local hooks". Whole bunch of different elements to do it right.

      3) Citations. Quality counts. Again tons of different issues with each.

So those are the main things. Backlinks I've never done for local. In the past they weren't really necessary for local except in super competitive markets. But now with the Pigeon algo they may be a little more important. BUT still does not matter if you don't do 1 and 2 right.
