Your list is both outdated & useless for ranking pages.

    Outdated:
    • PR

    Useless:
    • Domain Authority
    • Page Authority
    • Alexa Rank

Focus on links from same/similar niche sites, where the entire site/s is relevant to the subject. Those are long term links.

If your niche is payday loans where nobody wants your link on their domain/pages or you want full control over backlink domain sources, build a private link network where you own the domains (links).

  • Domain authority, page authority and the like, you can consider them all. But after a site passes through that, check the site itself. Sometimes, there are high pr sites that are not really good. A sample of these sites are those bought domains that already have high PRs. You have to check further by looking at the site if it is updated. See if it has good contents and if regularly updated. Evaluate if it is spammy or not, like if contains lots of links from not so relevant sites. One good site, say a blog, you would see a good content and with blog comments relevant to the posts. Usually, good blogs moderate the comments and not automatically approve them.

  • The first thing to consider is whether an average person would enjoy reading more than 1 sentence of your website. If the answer is no, you should consider doing something else.

  • None of the above and the only thing that you will consider is your targeted audience then quality backlinks will follow.

  • Authority and quality as mentioned above. No point in building a bunch of links from sites that have spam written all over them. I'm amazed at the kinds of comments people leave on my sites, which are moderated, and they think the link will go live (well, I know they are hoping it is auto approve, but they should know better).

  • Although after Google's recent updates, it is clear that backlinks doesn't owe that much value as it was earlier. But one can still do it for online branding and reputation.

However, if you still want to do it then search for the sites which are relevant to you, are similar to your niche, have some domain authority.

    • Backlins are, and have always been, one of the most important factors. Perhaps the situation has slightly changed over time, but not to the extend that this simplistic dismissal would be even close to correct.

Just look at this forum. Half of the site owners who can't rank only have a handful of lousy backlinks.

  • PR is dead now but rest all the things are to be consider while creating back-links.

    • PR and Alexa Ranking is almost dead and is not worth considering them. Backlinks from high authority domains are beneficial. Make sure they are relevant to your niche.

  • thanks everyone ... what I have got from your answers is that I need back links most importantly from relevant websites and the links from More Popular websites will have More Weightage, Less Popular websites will have Less Weightage

    • You are missing one vital ingredient that was not mentioned above...

Your backlinks must be followed links for them to bring you any SEO benefit i.e. they must NOT carry the rel=nofollow tag in the link code.

No-follow links will not rank anything, (they may bring you referral traffic, that is all)
  • Whether or not it will drive relevant traffic.

    That's it.

  • I think the answer is:
-relevancy of links coming into your website
    -naturally built links

Not to forget to mention: great content is still king!
