You should decide which one you want to talk about. Profiles - usually completely pointless. "Web 2.0" - may work in the right hands, but usually people don't know what to do with it.

This is the most asinine comment I've read today. If you post an article to some random web 2.0 site why on earth would anyone want to read that and "go to your website"? If they land on that piece of garbage they'd hate you for wasting their time. Well, maybe they'd click the link to see what company to add on their mental black list.

I'm sure even the signature spammers know this, but "massive traffic" isn't the point of "web 2.0" in SEO.

Why on earth would you suggest something like that? What's the mechanism that allows these weak new pages to "really improve your backlink"?

What's my theory? Well, I think people like you are making excuses and fooling themselves. Creating pointless profiles is simply something you enjoy more than your real work.

    hey guys/gals

talking about web 2.0 properties, I have a clients that need reputation management.

would my workers just create web 2.0 properties and then ping each of those properties, so they show up in google? By doing this, these high pr sites will show up first right?

When creating their profiles, if their names are used is it best to use a hyphen to separate their name or don't use it at all...

I'm not sure what you think "ping" means, why "pinging" would rank sites, or what your workers are actually doing.

Just building a web 2.0 site may not work that well, but if you get some backlinks to the profile/site it may start ranking pretty high. I, for one, am ranking for my social media pages for my personal and brand name, but I haven't built those overnight.

Web 2.0 still works but you need to be very careful in posting the content on web 2.0 properties. You can also apply link wheel strategy for this. Thanks!!

It seems a lot of people assume that because the home page of a web 2.0 site has authority (and it does), that each individual subdomain automatically gets that authority as well. That's not the case. You're jumping to conclusions because the home page is in fact an authority page (as in wordpress.com is PR9).

First, the home page PR doesn't travel to the millions of subdomains at a site like WordPress.

Second, user accounts have user-supplied content. Look at wordpress.com - there are gambling, pharm, escort, etc sites all over the place on wordpress.com. Do you think Google says "Well, WordPress is a trusted, authority, real business and website, so let's call each of the millions of xxxxxxxx.wordpress.com subdomains trusted and authority subdomains!" Doesn't work like that. Just like the pages of a "real" domain, the pages of your web 2.0 subdomain need to get backlinks to lend them any authority/worth.

Common sense should tell you that.

I'm not quite sure what "top bookmarks" are, but social signals and blog comments are not ranking the site. Uniqueness isn't a factor in anything, and high quality only if you manage to find an audience.

I'm not saying that the approach can't work, but it's probably hit and miss. And especially if you're building kind of "secondary" web 2.0 sites that aren't really standing on their own.
