Just taken over a client site and the backlink profile is a mess.

It's been over optimised - 31% anchor for a buying keyword from a load of free directories.

We've sent out emails to all the directories requesting removal - obviously not getting much joy (user generated content and all that)

There are strong natural links pointing to the site - it hasn't been penalised (yet)

Would you disavow at this stage as well as cleanse or just cleanse?

Anchor text percentages are really not a problem, despite what the masses will try to tell you.

Just remember if you use the Disavow file, and Google follows it, you will likely see a rankings drop. Prepare your client for that before you do it.

I been waiting since February...still nothing happen; I am about to give up and start a new site.

To get webmaster remove is almost to impossible, your best bet is to disavow..... Google Panada refresh about 2 month ago, you may want to start now and wait until the next refresh.

it's amaze me how people in this forum think the best link building strategy 2015 is forum profile, web 2.0, social bookmarking....

    Good luck

Why don't you diffuse the 31% anchor for a buying keyword by creating more links to other anchor texts if that's the main issue?

Odds are they've done the cookie cutter IM SEO with links only pointing to the Home page.

Solution, build new internal pages with fresh/decent backlinks pointing at the internal URLs.

Forget the Home page (or whatever page), don't go telling Google WMT the last guy was a link spammer. Move on to new pages & new links.

If its a long time and you may go with disavowing links.

Try building out more links, diversify it, make it look natural and the 31% on that anchor will neutralize soon enough once these get indexed.
