Silo Structure Question

Basic ass question but I'm getting old so I forget things. How do I make a inner page URL on wordpress like this.. http://sitename.com/dog-training/teach-a-dog-how-to-sit ?? Notice how it's 3rd tier? Isn't this best practices for silo structure? Or it doesn't matter? Can I just have it as http://sitename.com/dog-training as the top of the pyramid and then an innerpage as http://sitename.com/teach-dog-how-to-sit ???

Would that still work? Will it pass link juice? Or I really need to have make those tiered URL''s ?

  • Yukon perhaps you can help here.

So I guess its because I didn't create a "category" URL page.

So every page is acting on it's own. My pages are now ranking toggling on page 2 with some PBN links. I'm afraid that if i change the URL structure it will mess everything up.

So the question is, is it still okay? I'm internal linking all of them but they're all unique URL's of it's own without a 3rd tier..so....

    example

    hxx://sitename/dog-training

    Silo structure
    hxx://sitename/teach-a-dog-to-sit
    hxx://sitename/teach-a-dog-to-swm

    Is that still ok?

    or it needs to be
    hxx://sitename/dog-training/teach-a-dog-to-sit

If you're using Wordpress Post you'll need a Category page.

If you're using Wordpress Pages you'll need to create a Parent page & all the remaining pages will be assigned as Child pages in the right sidebar/drop-down on the WP Page editor.
  • Right so let's say the category page happens to be

    "Dog Training"

However, that category page is an ARCHIVE template by default. Is there anyway I can customize that to an actual post/page ?
  • Wow looks like PAGES makes this whole scenario MUCH easier....

So this is for breadcrumb and silo?

Now does that mean my silo structure didn't work if my prior site doesn't have it as tiered? and it's all separate but yet interlinked?

I'm not sure what you mean. Make sure you only have one version of each webpage, no duplicate internal pages regardless what they're called.

Breadcrumbs have to be coded in the WP theme so that's up to you If you want them or not.

If it wasn't a Parent/Child structure on the URL it wasn't a true silo, it might have been deep linking but that's not necessarily the same as a well structured site. Google looks up & down a URL hierarchy (ex: breadcrumbs).

  • Definitely go with the parent page and the child pages within that silo.

Think top level pages being the overarching page that gives the overview of all the specific pages within that silo. You may have 10 pages under the parent page and each of those 10 pages may be even more specific and have 3 - 4 under them. Obviously don't just create pages for the sake of it but ultimately if you are providing something of value that a potential customer can find immediately in the SERP's and talks directly to their needs you will be delivering a great UX (so higher in the SERP's, more traffic) and because it's very specific likely higher conversions and higher transactions.

If you want an in-depth article on this then check this one out by Bruce Clay - BruceClay - SEO Silos - how to build a website silo architecture Give yourself a hour or so to read and absorb everything here though. It's probably the most complete article I have come across on the topic.

    Supposed I have this...

    http://dogsite.com/how-to-train-a-dog

    supporting page - dogsite.com/how-to-train-a-dog/treats-for-training
    supporting page - dogsite.com/home-to-train-a-dog/puppy-classes-for-training

Would each supporting page link back to the parent page http://dogsite.com/how-to-train-a-dog ? OR to the home page dogsitelcom?

The Parent page is the Home page for the Child pages. Link to the Parent page.
