Hi Guys,

I want to know that are "directory submission" and "social bookmarking" still an effective way of creating links and do they have any impact on rankings?

Not as effective as they were a few years ago. If you must use them, use them on your 'Tiers' and not directly on your money site.

Google has mentioned quite a few times that they have started devaluing links coming from places like directories that allow users to create links manually, without any editorial oversight.

However in some niches they might still work, if the competition is too weak.

In my opinion a much better approach would be to use niche forums, portals, niche blogs, guest blogging for building backlinks.

      Hi,

I am promoting websites in the Greek blogosphere (which means less competition than in google.com) , and i have to say that here in Greece (google.gr), both directories and social bookmarking work.

Regarding social bookmarking, the best websites that help me are the high quality content curation platforms like pinterest, scoop.it and list.ly, while simple bookmarking websites like xmarks and folkd do not affect my rankings a lot.

Thank you for such valuable information. How can we use portals, could you give any example?

Yeah both of them are still effective and also helpful for the website ranking. I usually do directory and bookmarking for my site ranking.

Directory submission is not so popular and often as it was in past and this is happening for obvious reasons and that is penalization during last panda updates.

Therefore, key idea for us when we are going to create directory backlinks(and backlinks in general too) should be quality over quantity.

By submitting your website to the quality directory you will get a quality backlink and increase website exposure. But how to do that? ( I ask myself for you )

    1. Submit your website into correct subcategory
2.Don't submit your website in to wrong category
    3. Don't provide wrong and unauthentic content
    4. Don't submit in directories asking for reciprocal links

Bookmarking and directories are good to get backlinks but if you do it in an ethical way. Don't do bulk submission and try to find out some directories & bookmarking sites having good authority & PR and relevant to your niche or having category relevant to your niche. Then you can post your content there and get backlinks. Basically directories are taking too much time to approve your link if you're doing free submission. But you can get instant approved backlinks through bookmarking.

Both Social Bookmarking and directory submission are different Off-page SEO techniques. Social bookmarking is more beneficial to get traffic on website. But you need to focus on major issue in bookmarking of C-class IP, so never try to get backlink from C-class websites. Directory submission are helpful to create backlink for a website. As we all knows that directory submission considered as spam by search engine, so try to create backlink using high PR and relevant directories with quality work.max.cro87

Good directories may work. Usually the good ones take a fee of some sort to keep it clean.

Social bookmarking is complete and utter BS. If you see someone talking about "high PR" you know that they have no clue about backlinking at all.

  • I would stay away from both. They are low hanging fruit, long exploited by SEOs, and rendered quite useless, and even risky. That's not to say that some don't help, but you really have to know what you are looking for, and spend some time examining both qualitative and quantitative metrics. If it were I, I would spend that time trying to pursue more worthwhile links.

  • Paid directories can work. Social bookmarking does NOT help your rankings. Free directories almost always suck.

Lot's of seo link builders doing social bookmarking for ranking their keywords. If social bookmarking is worthless and don't help to rank keywords then why they do this?

Both are good for getting backlinks and traffic for your site. Directory give permanent back-links if approved and social bookmarking only always give traffic to your site.

Nowadays Directory submission and social bookmarking are not such powerful backlink but before it was powerful and affected on ranking site. You can increase traffic to your site by social bookmarking and sharing your link and content.

Why do you say this? Do you have any explanation to why these would be effective?

Social bookmarking sites typically place your link on a new weak page. The link probably sits on a profile page or an archive, but these aren't strong either.

Directories can provide a decent backlink if the category page is at least somewhat strong (ie. has either external or internal backlinks), and doesn't suffer from too many outbound links or pagination.

There's also a ton of cheap imitations that aren't really social bookmarking or directories even when they're advertised as such. They've got all the limitations, but are spammy to boot.
