Google k.p. says 3,3 million avg. searches - but it does not make sense!

I found a 5 letter domain name, and when I type those 5 letters into Google keyword planner, it says:
Average monthly searches: 3,350,000
Competition: Low
Suggested bid: $1,86

But when I google those 5 letters, I only get 2400 hits.

And anyhow I split up those 5 letters when I search, like
L LL LL
LLL LL
L LLLL
etc.
it still does not make any word I can make sense from.

Should I buy this domain?

  • average monthly searches can be WAY off with how Google is now doing things.

I would check Google Trends to try and get more insight into the keyword.

Worst case you buy the domain and out of lunch money for a day.

Sorry I don't have a link to the article that was posted recently about Keyword Planner (probably on MOZ, SEW or SEL). In essence, it said that KW Planner was combining the results of plurals, singular and synonyms into the monthly searches for any given keyword phrase. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. It just shows that Google is going to show results for that phrase for more queries than just the exact match. We have noted that search has been moving that way for at least a year. No longer are singular and plural treated as different KW phrases, for instance. The results for most singular/plural queries are almost identical now, with maybe a one ranking position shift one way or another. They used to be VERY different.

You're talking about two totally different things... traffic and pages indexed in Google SERPs (which doesn't matter). The Adwords bidding price and PPC competition (ex: Low) also doesn't matter for organic SERPs.

Odds are the domain is a root keyword (ex: garden, hammer, boat, etc...) that nobody will actually search for and zero buyer intent.

Honestly, I couldn't figure out what Bjarne was talking about when he referenced the number of "hits" and yes, if he is talking about the number of competing websites it doesn't matter at all. The only thing that matters is who is on page one and can you beat them.

As far as search numbers from the Keyword planner goes,I stand by the comment that Google is now combining singular and plural searches and reporting that as the number for both.

I never really addressed the crux of the question which was whether to buy the domain name or not. Your domain name really doesn't matter that much as long as it is short and memorable. If it has keywords in it, great, but don't expect it to do much for you in terms of ranking the site.
