Do Shortened URLs Still Give You Back Links?

Hi Warriors. Looking for some quick advice:

When I post a link to my blog -- let's say I post the link in a forum, or on a social networking site like Facebook -- does it rob me of my "link juice" if I shorten the URL (using TinyUrl.com or another link-shortening service?)

Basically, does Google treat a "shortened" link the same way it would treat a regular long link? Does it not matter? I want to make sure I get credit for every back link that I create.

TinyURL uses a 301 redirect to translate their constructed URL to the intended one. This means that any links to the TinyURL should be interpreted as pointing toward the target URL, preserving most or all of the "link credit" of those links.

It is better to check what type of redirects are offered by other such services.

Yes I too agree with him. Tiny URLs doesn't affect the transfer of link juice, as most of these services uses 301 redirection..

It was a great share. Especially because I use Wordpress for a lot of blogs. The URLS for the individual posts are very long and look like spam if you post them. This method gets around that. There are some very smart dudes on this forum who are generous with their knowledge.

So, yes, they give you back links...

just so long as your shortening service remains in business that is!

(Interesting to note is that Tr.im nearly shutdown in August, but is now 'putting itself in public hands' to avoid the loss of all those links...the CEO of Tr.im actually argues that all URL shortening should occur in the public domain.)

So, TIP: spread your shortening around - ie. use different services, even to generate several different shortened URLs to the same page. This not only will help to guard against any eventual catastrophe at any one shortening service, but will also put your link on a number of high-PR sites, since they typically will log a page on their site of all shortlinks generated by you.
